Disagree (and I never heard of Howard Hawks). Ask any guy who had fights in school. Happened to me several times between grammar school and HS.
I am a guy who had fights in school and encountered my share of bullies. In the real world bullies are bad children who have too much self esteem and confidence. When you piss them off (by hitting them, for example) they don't become your buddies or slink away in fear because of your heroism. They double down and figure out a way to get back at you.
You never heard of Howard Hawks? Seen many movies?
In the book I believe he takes care of the bully as a child and as an adult says he could do so again. They don't become friends.
