I always thought that was the cuss words being censored, like when Mikey Ralphie says "fudge" instead of the other.

That is exactly what it is. the father curses a lot and it is heard by us the viewer as gibberish words. That is where ralphie learns to cuss.

Totally! I've been having this movie on a constant playing loop as I always do before Christmas. It's an indulgence and a total enjoyment for me. Whenever I see the meatloaf, mashed potatoes and cabbage, it instantly makes me so very hungry for that exact meal. I'm salivating at the thought! Looks so darn good!
