Anyone know of any "Hidden Gem" Christmas films

I love quite a few of the standard classics like this film, "Wonderful Life", "Christmas Vacation", "Miracle on 34th St", and of course..."Jingle All The Way", but that's the problem with classics, I've seen them all so many times I'd like to see something new.

Just to try and save some time, some big films I know of but did not like:

The Home Alone stuff
The Tim Allen Santa Stuff
Elf and Bad Santa to name a few.

Some Hidden Gems I've found:

Santa Claus the Movie (was an 80's film, nothing to do with the Tim Allen stuff)
Mr Kruger's Christmas (not a full length film, just a short, has Jimmy Stewart)

Anyone else have any suggestions, preferably things that aren't well known? Thanks.

The Bishop's Wife - David Niven, Loretta Young, Cary Grant.

There are other classics that tend to get overshadowed by Miracle on 34th Street and It's a Wonderful Life. The Bishop's Wife, Holiday Inn, and Christmas In Connecticut are some of my regular viewings. There is also a huge collection of A Christmas Carol/Scrooge movies. My 2 favorites are the 1938 and the 1951 versions. Recently saw there is a 1935 version as well that I want to look for. There have also been more modern remakes it.

Yeah, I know of the "Christmas Carol" films, I should listed that above as well but was trying to keep my post as brief as I could.

I've watched "Bishop's Wife" as well but haven't seen "Christmas in Connecticut", thanks for the tip.

The 1996 remake, The Preacher's Wife, with Denzel Washington and Whitney Houston and directed by Penny Marshall, was also pretty good.

You'll definitely enjoy Christmas in Connecticut, if your OP is any indication.

A Diva's Christmas Carol (with Vanessa Williams), which initially aired on TV in 2000, was enjoyable, if not cheesy, but that's how Christmas movies should be, IMO.

The Ref (with Denis Leary, Kevin Spacey, and Judy Davis) is a 1994 black comedy about a burglar who inadvertently takes hostage a squabbling, married couple on Christmas Day. It's very funny, if you appreciate that type of humor.

That's off the top of my head. I'll return, if I can think of more.

It Nearly Wasn't Christmas. It's one of my favorites. It's never been released on DVD or even VHS that I know of. It's on Youtube.

I'd also put Love, Actually in there

I couldn't believe when I read his filmography that he played a toilet (no joke) in According to Jim

Love, Actually is not exactly a 'hidden gem.' It's very beloved and popular, especially around the holidays, naturally.

Not really into horror at Christmas time, but the "Virginia" one has......CHARLES BRONSON! I'm sold, gonna check that out. Thanks.

I believe that's an older version... and I think you may have convinced me to finally see it!
This is the one i was talking about:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1545330
Featuring Neil Patrick Harries, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Steve Buscemi's brother who I did not know was a pretty well-known voice actor.

"Yes, Virginia" stars Charles Bronson. But even though it's a Christmas movie, they couldn't resist having him deck a guy.

"A Child's Christmas in Wales" is delightful, more of a short than a film.

I have that one, you're right it is good thanks for letting others know tho, Happy New Year.

A Christmas Carol, starring Alastair Sim. It may not be a "hidden gem", but it is a perfect Christmas movie.

reply

Joyeux Noël. It's a war movie, and it's in a bunch of different languages, so be prepared to read. It takes place during the Christmas truce in WWI when both sides of the war agree to a ceasefire just to celebrate their potentially, last Christmas together.

Silent Night-it's a Hallmark movie made in 2002 and stars Linda Hamilton. It's based on a true story from WWII.
