Santa's "elves" were terrible!

What was with Santa's "elves" being so mean to the kids?

Because they were under a lot of stress and wanted to get home as quickly as possible.

and wanted to get to happy hour. 

Every single kid cried and screamed when they visited Santa. It got to them by the end of the day.

They were early twentysomethings dealing with screaming kids all f'n night, on Christmas Eve no less.
I actually thought Santa & the elves were a lot meaner when I was a kid. Santa doesn't even kick Ralphie like I remembered, he just gives him a tap after being kindly straight about shooting his eye out.
Craziest part of that whole scene, the weirdo kid with the goggles was pretty much not even acting... just saying his lines, yet apparently he wasn't quite all the different in real life.

It's obvious to me that the kid in the googles was a "Future Friend of Dorothy's", starring at Ralphie and talking about how much he "loved" the Tin Man.

clearly, they didn't get a smoke break. 

I don't believe it was Christmas Eve at all since the mall would've been closed sometime around 6-7pm if it did take place on Christmas Eve, I always assumed it was a night or two before Christmas Eve when they went to see Santa.

reply

They were mean as Ralphie saw them. They were probably more neutral and just doing their job. Ralphie saw them mean cayse he was intimidated and scared so the view is skewed by ralphie

Is this Idaho? Because I will not limbo in Idaho.

They weren't being as mean as depicted. We are seeing all of this through the eyes of Randy and Ralph. A nervous kid can see things quite differently than as they really are. When they are done meeting Santa Claus mom and dad pick them up and they walk away. They then pan back to Santa Claus and the elves and it turns out they are being friendly to the kids.

Do you think he wants some cheese?

reply

Yeah, Ralphie was just miffed because Santa didnt say he'd get the BB gun. His little brother cried a lot anyway, so I'm not surprised he cried going down the slide. Santa and elves probably weren't being mean at all.

reply

his little brother was an agitator!

I don't think so actually. I've been watching some behind the scenes videos and apparently all the kids described that Santa as doing a good job at being an evil Santa, and that yes indeed, they were supposed to come across as scary and impatient and intolerant. It was not a skewed view as remembered by a kid.

To those saying this is evident because as the camera pans back to the Santa and elves after Ralphie slides down,...it doesn't. Yes, the camera briefly glimpses up, but you can see that Santa and both elves are indeed wearing scowls and grouchy faces. So that was IRL reality.

I do think some of it has to do with being a kid and all kids freak out, but yeah, go figure. That's how they were supposed to be. I still think it's because it was approaching zero hour and everybody just wanted to get the hell out of Dodge.

But as Ralph and his family were walking away they pan back and Santa is being very nice to the kids.

You have to take a better closer look at that part. You can see that the elves are still very same has they were with Ralphie.

reply

The female elf is seemingly being mean because she is positioning the kids to lift them on to Santa's lap and that could seem mean to a child. The other elf is not shoving the little girl (Santa calls her Chris) down the slide. He's being careful with her or at the very least not sadistic.

I didn't think the male elf was too bad but my goodness the female elf was horrible!

reply

She was going to be a future cat lady.

reply

The others are right we saw him from a kids points of view. If you remember once Ralphie and Randy are walking away you see the camera pull back and Santa is all nice and kind while talking to a kid. Many kids especially very young ones are scared of Santa. My middle daughter wouldn't go near him until she was about 6! Lol

reply

I can attest to that. I have done "Santa Pictures" for the kids at our church for several years. There are kids who literally scream when they are put on his lap. In some cases where the parents are determined to get a photo. After learning their kid doesn't like Santa, they will have me get all ready, shutter button halfway depressed, drop the kid on his lap and jump back out of the way.

Maybe you're trolling...but, wasn't them being "mean" the point of the scene?! Ralphie was expecting Santa and elves to be nice and on his side with help getting the bb gun. Obviously, scene would of been boring and not funny, if Santa and elves were happy and helpful !

reply

I'm not trolling. I was just surprised that it wasn't just Santa being a jerk.

They're also pretty terrible seasonal low-paying jobs where you have to put on ridiculous outfits and have to deal with screaming kids for hours. Just not a preferred job for anybody.

reply

I was wondering were Santa and the elves being that scary for REAL or were the kids just seeing them that way, many times children are scared of Santa.

Drugs.
