What happened to these children?

It's a really good question. I too would like to know what have happened to the kids and the different insitutions. I know that Elán has closed, which is good!

I have worked with mentally- and physically challenged youngsters in Denmark for almost 6 years now. It is a really good job even though it can be really stressful because of cut-backs from the government, but seeing the young people happy really makes your day! I know that Scandinavian pedagogues are appreciated many places in the world, because of their high (and different) education which we have had for many, many years.

I don't know how it is in the states now, but when my friends were educating themselves 5 years ago, they could almost get a job anywhere in the World, except for Denmark because we produce too many pedagogues.

I responded in the other thread about my brother's situation. I wish I had some idea about the other kids, since I'm sure some of those other places did not do anything to prepare them for the outside world, or even give a damn about whether they lived or died under their care. Probably the biggest change between then and now is the use of the word 'autistic' - in my brother's case, he's now called 'profoundly mentally retarded' - not a pretty phrase, but I guess that it implies that he's got it all.
