Worst boom mike operator ever?

Something tells me they should have fired whoever it was holding onto that thing. It seems to dip into practically every scene, and it's so goddamn noticeable.

THIS FILM IS MEANT TO HAVE THE TOP PART CROPPED OFF IT'S MATTED WIDESCREEN

I shouted it because I'm tired of explaining it.

Did you not notice the black bars appearing at random points too? (especially the first shower scene) It's supposed to be cropped to 16x9 as it was in the theatres

Amen! Sic Coyote and roegcamel. Don't you get tired of having to explain to people over and over about open matte movies vis a vis DVD releases? I know I do. :-) (See many of my posts on IMDb and Amazon about this very issue.)

Yes, but shouldn't the boom mike be cropped out of the VHS or DVD release? I noticed it in many scenes here.

@ WarpedRecord: Only if the version you're watching is WIDESCREEN. If you are watching a VHS or DVD that is in standard 4:3 FULL FRAME aspect ratio, the boom mikes will NOT be cropped out as the 4:3 version is by definition un-cropped. When the movie is properly matted to 1.85:1 the top and bottom of the 4:3 frame are cropped out, removing the boom mikes, etc., which you were never intended to see in the theatre. Please see the article on Wikipedia on open matte cinematography here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_matte.

Thanks very much for the details and the link, Surfink! I see boom mikes a lot in full-frame movies on VHS (including this one), so that explains why. I guess if they cropped the top, they'd have to crop the sides even more.

Thanks again. That was very helpful.

This doesn't sound right. When they actually film a movie, they make sure the mic is not in the shot. So, if the mic is not in the original print, why would it be when it's shown in either format? Are you saying that when they look through the camera lens to shoot, the camera is (or is not) picking up a wider shot than appears?

Any other film shot /shown like this film does not show the boom mike. This is the ONLY film to have incurred this, like an anomaly? According to trivia, it's a goof:

Chained Heat (1983)
Goofs
Showing one item
Boom mic visible
The boom microphone is visible multiple times during the movie.

IY, the film would have been filmed open matte. This means that the image shot, covers pretty much the entire standard 1:33 ratio\frame-4x3. When projected in the cinema or shown in the 16x9 tv ratio, the top and bottom of the image would be cropped and conceal the boom mike. The film was shot for 1:85 flat ratio. If seen on vhs, in order to conceal the boom mike, they would have had to crop the sides, which means blowing up the image. It was kept open matte, to coincide with the old standard tv ratio 1:33, to avoid altering the image. You are seeing more in a sense, of what you aren't really supposed to see. On a 16x9 tv, one would have to zoom in the image to fill the screen for the correct aspect ratio 1:85.
