Ferry Disaster Question

When Vanessa boards the ferry near the end of the film, the cameral lingers on the vessel's name, as though it should be recognized and significant. Is the disaster in the movie a depiction of a collision between a ferry and an ocean liner that actually ocurred in Australia in the 1930s?

reply

The collision was a real event, it remains Sydney Harbour's worst disaster. On the afternoon of 3 November 1927 the ferry Greycliffe was run down and sunk in a collision with the steamship Tahiti which was leaving Sydney Harbour. About 40 passengers were killed. The cause of the accident was eventually put to failure of the Greycliffe's steering gear which caused her to swing off course and into the path of the steamer.

Thanks!

Thanks.

I wonder if this was how Sumner Locke Elliott's Aunt Jessie (Aunt Vanessa in the movie) died? I read she died in the 1920's. And I wonder if her death is what ended the custody fight between her and her sister or, as in the movie, she'd already decided to give him up just prior to her death?

Anyway, thanks again for the info.

reply

Yeah, thanks. I was wondering the same thing!
