This Movie will be considered a Classic

The subject line of this movie is an incredibly difficult one to portray unless the actors have insight into the psyche of the 2 main characters - namely (the crim element lifestyle of Jesse ...... and the straight girl to whom he was soul-fully and desperately attracted, Monica ..... and their interaction - and the dilemma this created for both of them, and the sheer impossibility of a relationship between them ever working - despite the fact that they were POWERLESS against their attraction to each other. It is a massively complex human interaction, situation. The 2 actors chosen for the parts were PERFECT .... and indeed it never fails to amaze me each and every time that i watch it - as to how Richard Gere has the dedication, the psyche and the talent (and where he obviously studied real life characters in this situation) where Gere pulled off playing this character to a T, down to most minute actions and expressions !
Monica was perfect - not over-played nor under-played ..... just perfect as a girl torn. She loved him to her depths (and to her immense surprise).. and was irresistably drawn to him - but had a life time of conditioning working against her staying with him. This whole situation into which she was thrown, necessitated (apart from her training) to be very careful in what she said when she spoke, and whether she spoke up at all - she was walking a tight rope - she astutely realised where her whole future was hinging on what was in her face at this very moment. I cant think of another player who could have pulled off the hugely difficult part she played - with such authenticity - that is, that her demeanour and reactions were EXACTLY true to how a girl in her precise situation and where she was at that time situated in the scheme of her life, would have behaved. She was obviously hand picked to play this gruellingly 'real' life twisting part.
This is one of those 'curve ball' situations that life can throw up at the young and naive - out of control, and fateful for both - completely out of the realms of anything they had planned for their lives.
This movie is a piece of ART which deserves close study, by the unknowing (of that real particular life scenario) ..... which believe me, they (the director, the actors and the support team, the researchers etc.) have got down pat !!

A CLASSIC ..... an 'insightful' TREASURE ...... authentic Time Capsule material.

i feel embarrassed for you.

is that it ?

i am not a mind reader..... would you mind responding with more than 5 words ..... meaningless with no explanation, challenge or input.

otherwise i am left to believe that you are a shadow warrior, your only mission to flit around with not a constructive thought in your head ... and with no other intent but to provoke ppl with a random insult leaving no chance to respond

as it is shallow, mindless and childish behaviour - I feel sorry for you

i like the way you finished your post. it made me smile.

i think i do have constructive thoughts, and i think i have better things to do than provoking people with random insults. i just replied as genuinely as i could in that moment. it's like when you see some *beep* saying rent is a fantastic musical or that clerks 2 is better than clerks (which kind of sucked to begin with). my initial response when faced with such ignorance is immediate aggressiveness and disgust. sorry for being hotheaded. en plus, i'm pretty sure i expressed my opinion about this absolute cowpat of a film in other posts, and didn't feel like typing it up all over again.

"shadow warrior", eh? nice. dramatic.

to summarise my opinion - richard gere's performance may be quite good, but to remake any of godard's work is completely retarded, insulting and unnecessary. the essence of godard's films is ipso facto impossible to reproduce, rendering such an endeavour futile by definition. these are films about the ephemerity of the cinema, about the here and now, above all things about NEW, FRESH approaches to filmmaking. to reproduce any of it hardly seems appropriate, does it?

i imagine this film was made for the money or by a fan who didn't quite get the point.

is my response meaty enough for you? if you want more on this, read Jean Collet's essays on Godard - he expresses himself better.

thank you .... so grateful that you posted a considered thought provoking reply

at least now we can agree to disagree (in a mature manner)

In all seriousness, I truly love this movie. I'm not sure it will ultimately come to be considered a classic, but I do think it's a seductive, energetic, and highly underrated work. I am a small group of people who share my love for it, but mist people don't even know about it.

With all the respect for those who enjoyed the movie -- and everybody's free to enjoy this movie --, I think it's weird a remake of a classic become, itself, another classic. Well... "Per un pugno di dollari" is a classic and a remake of "Yojimbo", but the former is a western and the latter a samuraii movie. And I think I've made my point clear. "Per un pugno di dollari" grasped the essence and transformed the movie in a new way. I think it's rather difficult, the same have happened with this remake of "À bout de souffle". It's okay to enjoy the movie, but I can only imagine people considering it a classic if they didn't see the original.

cheers.

Martrix I agree with your analysis for the most part but I think Valerie's portrayal of Monica was a little wooden. Other than that I think their chemistry on screen was amazing and this was probably Gere's best performance. This a great and very under rated movie. With that being said, I have never seen the original can anyone give a description of how they compare and differ. Thanks.

I agree - plus the look and the soundtrack are outstanding. I've seen this movie many times since it was released.
