Another pointless American remake

This Movie is crap ! there is no chemistry between the stars, and Richard Gere gives one of his most wooden performances. Stick to the original French version, yes it has subtitles ... so what.

I am not a fan of remakes, in fact I passionaly oppose them. I have not seen this film, and I do try to judge each by their own indivdual merits. As I say I have not seen it, but if ever a film did not need a remake it was À Bout de Souffle. Even if it is good, which I have heard otherwise, the principle is enough to keep me away from seeing it.

I loved the original, and I've seen a lot of Godard films. But I still loved the remake of Breathless. It merely takes the structure of the original and transplants it into L.A., and switches the nationalities of the protagonists. It is simply a great joyride through parts of L.A. that are seldom shown in films (at least back in 83).

Godard made Breathless as a tribute to American B-movies, so it's only fitting that an American filmmaker would return the favor. In other words, McBride's Breathless is a homage to a homage. How post-modern can you get? I think Godard would approve.

Actually, a lot of Godard's films could be remade and re-set in the US. When I watch Weekend, with its endless traffic snarl, it reminds me of the 405 in L.A.

McBride joyously turned it right back into a B-movie, but a throwback to another era, taking the 40s poverty row noir story and decking the nouvelle vague approach with a fabricated 50s style. Godard circa 1958 would have loved this remake.

Whatever !!

This is one of the best movies ive ever seen and Richard Gere did an amazing job in this movie :)

I might see the original just to have seen it, but I doubt its as good as this one.

And eh no chemistry ?? Richard Gere and Valerie Kaprisky were smoking hot together in this movie, 10000000 times more than RG and Julia Roberts ever had.

This movie had everything a fun good movie should have !!

Gere's best.I mean if that's a wooden performance no actor would survive an energenic performance.

McBride did a great job. Was panned because he dared to rework a movie critics felt was sancroscent.

i think merely stating that godard made breathless as a tribute to american b films is misunderstanding the french new wave and misunderstanding godard. he've seen many films, many and he identified with b films because of virtually no budget that he had to shoot the thing. but his biggest role model was still howard hawks. and if there is a man he owes a lot to for the style of breathless, it is to melville, the director that played the author in the film. another dimention of the original is its location: it is set in france, which was a safe haven for many leftists in the 60s and created an interesting kind of paris. another thing about the original, it is very famously the first time godard made a metafilm, where the character acknowledges that he is in a film. and if you don't like what the film is about, he says, then get stuffed! well, godard was a director who truely worked with film as a creative medium, so when its said that this one of the most revolutionary films ever made, i agree, it definitely does not fit into a genre easily. the relationship between the two leads is if not complicated then realistic, based around sex and conceit, can it work out? when we talked, i talked about me and you talked about you, when we should have talked about one another. i just watched the original last night again. i dunno, it felt like an experience of pure cinema, i don't really want to watch the remake. there are waaaaay too many good movies out there for me to watch something i got a bad feeling about
Time is Luck. Luck ran out.

I couldn't disagree with you more. "Richard Gere gives a wooden performance", what planet are you from? Even if people hate the film they (well, most anyway) can acknowlegde a good performance when they see one. And the subtitles comment, what's that about. Are you implying that people who like this film wouldn't give the original a chance merely because it has subtitles?

This is more fun than Godard's, although I think most people would agree that the original is superiour. This is more shallow and mostly acknowledged for it's fantastic soundtrack, it's groove laden scenery, the stars sex appeal and, believe or not, Gere's kinetic and flamboyant performance in the lead.

Oh, and when I first watched it I was 11 years old and had to use the Icelandic subtitles since my english wasn't very good then.

Well I'm from planet Earth - if you think Richard Gere's performance was good in this film you must have very low standards.

'Even if people hate the film they (well, most anyway) can acknowlegde a good performance when they see one.'

I've seen better acting in an amateur theatre production.

'Are you implying that people who like this film wouldn't give the original a chance merely because it has subtitles?'

Yes that's exactly what I'm implying, you only have to look at the pointless remake of La Femme Nikita to see what I mean.

I enjoyed Gere in this film. Up to this point in his career, he had always played buttoned up GQ mannequin types (except for his crazy turn as the stud in Looking For Mr. Goodbar). So it was an unexpected delight to see Gere breaking out of the Rodeo Drive designer duds, ditching the Mercedes he drove in American Gigolo and adopting his thrift-store, Vegas, rockabilly persona in Breathless. You can tell Gere had a lot of fun doing this film -- the scene in which he drives the stolen Porsche through the desert, when he throws out some tapes and puts in his own Jerry Lee Lewis tape, is hilarious. If this character had just stuck around for ten years he could have appeared in a Quentin Tarantino film.

It's always great to see an actor show new and unexpected dimensions. Compare Breathless to the work he did in An Officer and a Gentleman a year before -- he was good in Officer, but he played a sullen, uncommunicative type who had a hard time opening up. In Breathless, he is completely different, totally exuberant and flamboyant -- and having a blast. The craziness is contagious.

I think Gere is underrated.

I disagree with "bloggs18279". I reckon this is one of the finest ever remakes, up there with Scarface, The Fly, and The Thing.
