only 5,3 - YOU ARE KIDDING ME, RIGHT?

I really liked the movie. Jim McBride did a great job and Richard Gere was pretty cool. btw the soundtrack was AWESOME!

Yeah, they must be kidding. It's more like a 3.3, if that.

It's atleast a 6.5, I really loved Gere's character, ultra cool, I would've loved to see a prequel, or if the character didn't die a sequel.

You might want to put a Spoiler warning next time. I realize that the ending can not be a major surprise, but I still think it warrants a warning. I'm sure you didn't do this deliberately. I only mention this because sometimes people want to see why someone thinks a movie is ranked too low or too high, and they expect to read about bad acting, bad camera work, or slow pacing, for example, but not a ruined ending.

I'm with you! I gave it a ten and a positive review after having watched it 6 or 7 times recently on EPIX on demand. I think it's probably the best acting Gere has ever done and his Jesse was irresistible!

It's nearly masterpiece.,one of the best films of the 80's..don't bother what others says about it...of course we can't compare this film with the original one by JL Goddard....but is a very very good film.

I adore this film, the soundtrack is one of the most complimentary to what is occurring on screen, must have been a labour of love due to the incredible amount of location shooting. Richard Gere certainly used his, at the time, meteoric stardom to great effect in making this picture. IMDB score ratings are mostly meaningless doubly so in this instance.

I have loved this movie since I first saw it in the early 1980's.

I don't really think it is a film for everyone though, so I understand its low rating. For me, however, I love it.

First, the soundtrack is amazing. I absolutely love the pool scene and the score in that scene. The combination of Phillip Glass with the overlaid saxophone (I assume) is beautiful. It is probably my favorite love scene of all time. The score builds to a climax just as the camera angle changes. Simply beautiful. Such passion.

I am also mesmerized by the scene of Valerie Kaprisky simply sitting in the chair while again, Phillip Glass is playing. Such a simple scene shot so stunningly.

Years ago I finally got a chance to watch the Godard version and was quite disappointed. It is probably true that I am failing to appreciate some of the techniques he pioneered in film making but in my final analysis, I found the film a snooze fest. Don't get me wrong, it's not like the Gere version is action packed, which is why I say it is not for everyone. However, there is one significant difference. In the Godard version, I couldn't figure out why the main character was still hanging around. I didn't get his dilemma and why he didn't leave. It seemed like he was just content to sit holed up in an apartment. At least with the Gere version I understood his problem. He was in love with the beautiful Monica and didn't want to leave her behind.

I saw some posts here suggesting perhaps he didn't die in the end. I think they must have missed the movie I watched because it was clear to me how the movie ended. In fact, the entire movie was a character study of Gere's character. For him, it was all or nothing. Anything short of the ending I "saw" would be a betrayal to his character.

Beautifully cast, beautifully scored, but not for everyone.

I agree with your analysis 100%. That scene is probably my fav also.

Sounds right, only it should be 4.0.
