Brainstorm Remake

I can't be the only one who actually thinks that Brainstorm would benefit in the form of a remake...just sayin

Why? The Blu-Ray looks awesome. Why would it need to be remade? Why not just watch the original again?

Does it need more teal and orange color? Or more explosions and car chases? Seems like a completed movie to me.

I'd prefer to see time and money developing NEW concepts instead of all these remakes/reboots. There ARE new ideas out there. And often, they can be a lot of fun: Inception, District 9, even Looper

I can plainly see that you have some "Remake Issues", and I have watched Brainstorm every which way but why not build off the original. I too have some ramake issues with certain classics. Is this a classic ? Why ?. because it's lovely Natalie's last role ?...all I'm saying is that I can see a lot of "Technical" improvement to special effects (many inprovements in the past 20 years), AND who says it has to be the same storyline...thinking of how good Dredd turn out.

Some movies that should never-ever-ever be remade:
Psycho...oops, been there...tragically
True Grit....oops again
Wizard Of OZ...now that just obscene
Halloween...Zombie nails it
Titantic...how many times ?
Batman...infinitely along with Superman, Hulk & Spiderman
The Thing...pure unadulterated genius by Carpenter

What remake do you don't like ?

Well, I enjoy this movie. Yes, it is dated, but so are many things.

My issue with current "REMAKE-ITIS" is there is only so much screen space and time on the planet, and I will only live so long. And there are SO MANY MORE GREAT STORIES out there that could be told in a great movie, we will never see because some REMAKE takes up the time and space where a new, original, unique and maybe quite interesting story could be told instead. We'll never know, because a REMAKE took that time and screen space out of a year of movies releases.

remakes off the top of my head that were pointless:
more HULKs
Spiderman reboots
are we REALLY redoing Superman AGAIN??? ALREADY????
FootLoose (OMG you gotta be kidding me! More valuable screen space and time gone)
Red Dawn Red Dawn??? Wow, we really have no more creativity left do we.
Karate Kid
Fame

were they really needed? just to bring them up to date and have fresh young cute actors in them? were the stories really THAT GOOD?? I think we all know better.

Ok then, maybe you should check out some foreign movies that I found rather refreshing in the original sense, and if you don't mind subtitles (voice-overs are almost always ridiculous). I found these select titles to be very stimulating. Enjoy

Amelie
Mic-Macs
High Lane
Ip Man 1 & 2
Trollhunter
The Chaser
Mother
Memories of Murder
The King Of Devils Island
Bedeviled
Valhalla Rising

Amelie is a personal favorite. Just bought MicMacs have not watched yet. Probably check some of those others. Don't forget CITY OF THE LOST CHILDREN.

Now why can't some of those GREAT movies play in USA cinema instead of yet another remake of something not as good? It's sad.

reply

I hear what you're saying and Amelie was actually released into the US market and was well received, nominated for 5 Oscars, scored many other awards. But, thats only a virtual needle in a haystack. also check out the Pusher series (3 films) by Nicolas Winding Refn, very intense Danish offerings.

thanks for the input. I'm always looking for great and interesting movies to enjoy - over yet another remake of an already well know story.

Far as BRAINSTORM is conscerned, I simply consider it a time capsule of it's day, flaws and all. Watching it in 2013 - having grown up knowing most of the technology they used to make this film (large tape machines with that fake reflective ribbon, various large scale computers and monitors, video audio sweets etc) I am actually surprised how well they pulled it off back then.
And I enjoy going back and re-seeing how that tech was, and how they tried to futurize it.

I mean at first they had that huge wired up gizmo on his head... you'd almost think it really worked as a prototype... if they remade it today, the prototype might be a bluetooth earbud or something lame, small, and uninteresting.

Even STRANGE DAYS sort of dialed down the whole head gear thing to where it was almost uninsteresting.

I agree, this could be redone very well.

Still like the original, but would not mind a well done remake.

Yes could be a good ad for google glass

I totally agree with you. This film defined what heaven might be as well, which was very interesting as a theory.

I read your discussion about pro's and con's of remakes. Largely I agree with both of you, it's a tough one. I've actually thought about it a lot and here's what I propose. Instead of remakes, lets starting doing 'mashups' of multiple plot-lines grafted together. For instance, what if Brainstorm, Dreamscape, Strange Days and the Matrix could all be connected with one or more patch stories that link the together. We could make most of a new story out of existing footage. I think a good name for this idea would be something like Scrapyard.

Another one I think would be great for that is (almost any movie) and The Goonies. I just love the Goonies and think you can link them to almost any storyline. I think a really good one for that would be The Rocketeer. They could find the rocket pack in some abandoned garage, hilarity and adventure ensue, etc.

Anyways, I just thought about this some lately, read your posts and thought hey maybe if I rant about this, other people will too and it will start to happen.

Have a nice day.

I do tend to lean toward some movies being best left alone. As for this movie's concept, let's face it...it was stellar. Virtual reality long before the VR-laced movies of the 90's came to be. Mind/sensation sharing long before "Inception" was made. And the concept of connecting computers through phone lines before the Internet became a reality. "Brainstorm" was quite innovative for this, and I enjoy watching it.

Too many of the films I grew up on have been remade, almost ALL of them badly. We don't " REMAKE" paintings, what is this obsession with reboots, updates and remakes? Tons of new and original scripts floating around Hollywood that will never get made yet studios vomit money and energy on countless lousy remakes, enough already.

reply

why not? because you will never, ever get a young christopher walken together with natalie woods. as rough as some footage is, this movie is pure inspiration. no amount of modern hollywood slick could improve on it. (you'd end up with, say, something like the recent mad max remake... god help me)

i rented it on videotape not long after it was originally released, on a curtis mathes VHS player that cost me about 700 dollars (it was new technology) that just about broke me. that's how long i've been obsessed with film. our thoughts, me and my friends, after seeing it were not about the production or special effects. it was more like, damn, none of us could think of one single thing we could have done differently, more than, with that machine. in other words it grabbed hold of us at the human level; as explorers, as scientists, as intellects, as political creatures, as simple hedonists, but most of all, as evolving people. this film magically captures everything that drives us to live, forwards and backwards at the same time.

here i am over 30 years later enjoying it again.
