spoilers!!! What is the truth about Gordy?

We see Gordy in serious distress viewing the death tape on an unaltered machine while Mike is watching it on the one he modified to protect his heart. Later, the Alex says that Gordy is dead because he viewed that tape without authorization. Do you think he is telling the truth, that Gordy survived to watch the tape again or did we see Gordy die in the earlier scene and Alex is just covering for himself and the scientists who were there?

I always thought that the tape had stopped before she ripped the headset off. The idea being that Mike had watched the death experience of his friend, and had inadvertently kind of "piggybacked" his way into the afterlife so that his own soul or self was being drawn into heaven.

Or maybe I'm wrong.

You’re talking about the scene at the end but this thread is about Gordy’s death. Well anyway I agree with you: Mike made it to the end of the tape which put him somewhere in space, he said “finished” and he continued on, like you said “piggybacked,” to the afterlife and collapsed and Karen held him saying “no” but I think it’s odd that she didn’t yank the headset off. Even though he said it was over, she should have done it to be safe. He was the one that finally took it off after coming back to life or whatever. I’m glad they ended the tape when they did because I would have thought it stupid to have the tape capture the experience of being in “Heaven” or whatever, since if Lillian were really in Heaven, then she’d be totally brain dead rendering no signal for the machine. You can interpret all she saw as being real or just random imagery from a dying brain, and you can interpret all that he saw afterward as being real or just hallucination. That’s pretty cool.

I thought this was pretty clear in the movie.

When Michael Brace first plays the death tape, "team B" or the government tool hacks are spying on them and find this interesting. Michael Brace would have died if Hal had not ripped the headset off of him.

While Michael Brace figures out a way to rewire the machine so he can survive playing the tape, "team B" sets up Gordy to play the tape through a duplicate feed. The boss, Alex Terson, even protests that they should be not be doing things, saying it's "sick" and the MIT hack researcher guy says he takes full responsibility. The lab tech guy even points out something like "Dr. Brace said something about rewiring things" and the MIT hack guy says not to worry he knows what he's doing.

Playing the tape ends up putting Michael Brace in the hospital and killing Gordy.

It's spelled Raymond Luxury Yacht, but it's pronounced 'Throat-Warbler Mangrove'

Gordy dies because Michael reworked the wiring so his vitals wouldn't be linked to the tape, he could watch but not 'feel' it. The security guard tries to tell the MIT guy this but doesn't fully understand what Michael changed or how the machine works so no one really listens to his concern that "dr Brace said something about respiration". Their arrogance prevents them from listening. Gordy experiences the tape fully, has s vital are linked to the tape and so he dies as He experiences Lillian's heart attack.
