The dumbest film I've see in a long while...

and last week i saw the abortion known as "Leprechaun 3."

My aim here is to generate a list of all the stupid things that happen in this movie:

how about during the demonstration of BT in the desert, things are set up so the the audience platform is the backdrop of the firing range!

"Rampart: Squad 51."

How about its getting old for trolls to go to movies and start threads like these?...l swear, every single movie has someone like you come and start threads like these, no matter if the award winning epics or "dance movies".

And while yes having the audience platform that close maybe strange, it may have also been used to show how accurate Blue Thunders firing system was.

As they say, theres nothing like having a front row seat.

I agree, it's irritating all right isn't it ? Especially the continuous posting of plain obvious MORONS that even didn't watch the movie properly.
The last idiot like that I saw was on the user comment for "The Core".
This moron said (verbatim) : 'and what about the wind shield ? It's 7,000 degrees...' Arrrghhh !!! he didn't watch the movie !!! the main character had developed ultra sound to 'see' through thick material, there IS NO windshield.
And now the same morons are back to discredit this movie.
I remember vividly when this movie came out, back then it was quite something.
Overall I always liked John Badham's movies, especially 'War Games' and the likes.

And you're right, whenever I look at message boards for various movies - no matter how good/bad they are - there's always this obligatory gathering of morons-with-nothing-better-to-do (fair enough if they had a point, but must are clueless)

Cheers.

Okay, here's an even more stupid thing that happens during that demonstration. A whole bunch of "terrorists" (red dummies) suddenly appears in a school bus that also contains white dummies (presumably school children)... so the pilot blows away the whole bus with 20mm rounds. Now THAT'S ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure the purpose of that scene was to show that the Blue Thunder is not as awesome as the military wants to believe, and will be used to commit evil deeds.

The Scheider character uses the weapon AGAINST the government and then has the machine destroyed after he's foiled the conspiracy.

reply

That sounds a bit hypocritical- in the one sentence you're talking about the helicopter not being that "awesome," and then in the next you talk about how
it was able to fend off police cars, police helicopters, F-16s and the main bad guy's helicopter. So which is it? And if the helicopter wasn't that awesome, Scheider would not have destroyed it.

The answer is that the helicopter is supposed to be awesome- not perfect, but really good- and this should be obvious- this was one of those gimmick movies in the 1980s that marketed a movie around a vehicle, object, event etc- and then they would try to keep marketing the item for spin-offs, toys, sequels etc- the helicopter is meant to be impressive

Now I think the scene in the bus was used to show that the pilot didn't care about the loss of innocent life.

This is an entertaining but dumb movie- very dumb- like suspend disbelief at all moments-

RE: "This is an entertaining but dumb movie- very dumb- like suspend disbelief at all moments-"

That's your opinion but I don't subscribe to it. "Suspend disbelief at all moments" Now that's a ridiculous statement if I ever heard one. Maybe some of the technology was made up (whisper mode & LIVE fire button) & the tactics used in the movie were pushing the bounds of credibilty but that doesn't mean that the whole movie is one big unrealistic fairy tale. There were believable characters, real helicopters used (including Blue Thunder minus some of it's gadgets), real technologies (thermograph, helmut operated gun, computers) & a fairly believable plot with some of the coolest action scenes ever filmed. There's also no CG effects in this movie or hot chicks to spice it up (Top Gun). One more thing, the hero (Murphy) isn't some indestructable, perfect looking guy who is flawless & who escapes danger easily. He's a very ordinary guy who barely holds onto his job, suffers from PTSD, loses his flying status more than once, loses his partner after discovering the bad guys plan & barely survives the battle at the end. What's so dumb & unbelievable about that? I think Blue Thunder is one of the coolest & "smartest" action movies of all time.

reply

No the point is that Blue Thunder is awesome -- an awesome killing machine. It's just not that precise.

"He took out every red target!"
"And a few white ones."
"Ten terrorists dead for every one civilian, that's acceptable."

It's about how a lot of military leaders think in terms of numbers instead of the human cost. It's okay to kill some of your own people as long as you win the war. It's okay to violate civilians' privacy as long as you're doing it to the protect the city. Obviously Murphy disagrees with these ideas so he sets out to expose the project and destroy the machine.

reply

The bus is blown to bits because the firing mechanism on Blue Thunder malfunctions.

The word you're looking for is "abomination".

reply

No he probably meant abortion.

reply

yes, i did mean "abortion." abomination is a good word, too, but it's over-used in these contexts.

sorry to anyone above who is apparently john badham or john badham's offspring.

it was all meant in fun. didn't mean to hurt your feelings about a bad movie from 25 years ago.

sheesh.

these boards are replacements for fun conversations i fail to have in my real social life because few people i see daily knows much previous to 2000 as far as film goes. didn't know i was a "troll" for this. thanks for the goodwill.

lol, hilarious :-)

The movie is a classic.

Whoever said that this was the dumbest film they had seen in a long while wouldn't know good entertainment if it reared up and bit them on the a**!!!

Troll or not, if this is the dumbest film you have seen for a long while, then you obviously don't see many films. Blue Thunder has it's silly moments (what action film doesn't), but it was one of the best action films of the early 80's with one of the best casts ever put together for film of this type. It also had a very good moral about just how invasive and counter productive machines like Blue Thunder can be as well as how much mistrust there is towards Government security policy.

Rubbishing it is fine, we can't all like the same stuff. But to try and compare it to (and even admit to wasting time watching) a load of *beep* like Leprechaun 3 will result in you getting abuse from others. Especially when it was done with the old 'well, I was only joking. Sheesh, lighten up guys' attitude.

Just makes you sound a bit of a tosser.

'Culture, sophistication, a little bit more than an 'ot dog' You said it Bob!

So true! Nothing but brainless, CGI-infested crapfests. Not only that, but it now costs $11 to see these glorified video games! They're not even worth a fraction of that price. Whereas Blue Thunder gave you a lot more entertainment value for your money (what was the cost of a movie ticket in 1983 - $4 was it?).

It's great to see so many people coming here and defending Blue Thunder. It's a finely crafted action thriller, very exciting and suspenseful, and has some eye-popping stuntwork. And guess what - it's all done by real stunt people, not computers!

And how about that cast; Roy Scheider, Warren Oates, Malcolm McDowell, Daniel Stern, and Candy Clark. Wow!

reply

But the firing of heat seekers in down town LA was stupid to put it mildly. And to the previous post they were CGI F16's and crappy CGI F16's to boot.

reply

we are all that much dumber after reading your post... you are awarded no points and may god have mercy on your soul for your stupidity... this is a great great movie... you need to go away now and go home.. the street lights are on!!!

reply

Here are the really bad ones. Silence of the Lamb....much better serial killer flicks..see Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer , Man Bites Dog, Motel Hell, Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Far superior to the Anthony Hopkin flick.
Blue Thunder was better than movies like Top Gun-planes, Maximum Overdrive-trucks, Jurrasic Park-dinosaurs.
Watch Unhinged if you really want to see a bad horror movie.

reply

It's stupid yeah but Roy Scheider flips a goddamn helicopter, kills Alex DeLarge, parks Blue Thunder in front of a train to get destroyed and walks away like a total badass.

Can't hate on great. This is great entertainment that is leagues above what passes for entertainment today.

Best summation of Blue Thunder EVER. Rock on dude :-)

Oh, as for the reviewing stand being right in front of the targeting run of BT, I think that represented the level of confidence (read: arrogance) that the military had about BT and it's ability to pick its targets carefully. They were too arrogant to believe that it might malfunction and, as Cochrane said later, "kill the lot of them" while making a pass. And again, as for the white dummies getting skragged in the school bus, it showed the military's arrogance--so what if some civvies get deleted, we got the terrorists, didn't we? It's just collateral damage, lighten up. Fletcher as much as said so to Frank in the reviewing stand.

All in all, this movie is great. Perfect? No. Entertaining? Highly. And as many other posters have noted, more entertaining even than many of today's films. And they did it all without CGI (not that CGI in and of itself is bad, just the overuse of and dependence upon it). Bravo to all involved and may Roy and Warren rest in peace.

PS: Dude flipped a goddamn chopper. I'm still in awe of that.

Just relax, it's a fun movie, not meant to be taking serious

I loved this movie as a kid. It all the Cool! Awesome! stuff a sixteen year old needs. But seeing it now, the plot is filled with holes.

Why did they bring Murphy back off suspension to be part of the Blue Thunder project? That clearly ends up being a mistake they try to reverse right away.

Why does Murphy take it on himself to go back to a crime scene that is not his job as a pilot to solve, only to find the most convenient possible piece of evidence hanging in a tree at no one else had the ability to find?

If he's motivated to protect the people of Los Angeles from the overzealous cops who want to militarize the sky, why does he put so many people at risk redirecting heat seeking missiles into populated buildings and shooting down an f-16 over the city?

I could go on.

It's a fun action movie, but a totally ridiculous plot.

Murphy, with all of his flaws, was a veteran pilot, not to mention an ex-military pilot with experience in handling such hardware, so they couldn't afford to keep him on suspension.

Why does Murphy take it on himself to go back to a crime scene that is not his job as a pilot to solve, only to find the most convenient possible piece of evidence hanging in a tree at no one else had the ability to find?

Because there was foul play involved. He mentioned to Braddock that there was a strange vehicle staking out the crime scene before the crime took place, and that it was gone afterwards, so something was clearly up. Typical of the LAPD (and cops in general), nobody, including Braddock, suspected (or cared) that there may have been foul play EXCEPT Murphy (because he's the hero, natch), so it was easy for that evidence to go overlooked until Murphy found it.

If he's motivated to protect the people of Los Angeles from the overzealous cops who want to militarize the sky, why does he put so many people at risk redirecting heat seeking missiles into populated buildings and shooting down an f-16 over the city?

I would venture to say he did all that specifically to show them just how dangerous it could be. What would be interesting to find out is what the repercussions were for Murphy after it was all over with (possible charges: murder--but he would probably plead self-defense; endangerment of life; destruction of public and private property; destruction of multimillion-dollar government vehicles and hardware).

Joining late but just seen this on Netflix.

Those of you lauding this film, I can kind of see why you might like it but for me the farcical elements just surpassed any real enjoyment,

When those hitmen went to Lymangoods house, I kept saying to myself that it's all part of the plan. Murph's going to jump out at any moment. Any moment now. Especially as they both know their lives are in danger. But no. Lymangoods wasn't even worried enough to not do his grocery shopping. You have to do those chores right away or they'll never get done.

Those is but one example. I'm far too lazy to mwrite the dozens of others.

Sorry to those who liked it but I thought this was poorly written and executed. The skeleton of the plot was kind of there but the actually plot elements were a joke.

The only thing I liked about this film was some relived nostalgia for (better) 80's films that I miss so much.
