Remake? or too idiosyncratic?

I love this movie... A quintessential 80s film... mixing the sentimental with the funny... casual drinking and smoking... adult relationships... captures the mood and atmosphere of the times... It's so good

I would love to see someone make an homage to this... it would be interesting to see someone try setting it in contemporary times...

What do you guys think? Would it be possible to remake this in current times? Can you guys think of any comparable movies to this? Or a similar movie set for later generations?

Funny thing is, this movie is sort of a remake of a lesser known movie, "Return Of The Secaucus Seven".

interesting! i didn't know that...

do you know if it's worth checking out?

I found it painfully boring
Im not interested in a remake
They did ok with this story once but really...who would buy this yuppy/shit material for a second round of boring and entitled well-off types struggling with marriage, relationships, personal issues etc...
Fucking yawn
'Im gonna drive my $50k Volvo into the lake and end my well to do life...fuck it'
Everybody in the original was a wealthy crybaby...NO remake
Hope they are all dead by now
Yes the time has passed

easy there... this was in the 80s... they didnt grow up in the current age of deminished expectations, so there wasn't this antagonism towards displays of wealth then...

anyway, the movie isn't about their wealth, it is about their struggle with adult life... that is universal... Sure, other people face more difficult problems, such as struggling to make ends meet, but do you really think problems end when people start to make six figures a year?

just because someone has a $50k Volvo doesn't mean they can't have an existential crisis...

anyway, don't you think there are enough crybabies around these days to warrent their own movie? ;)

Nowadays I see these tiny women driving all these luxury SUV's in the downtown core. Especially the Mercedes ones with the ridiculously over-sized logo on plastered on the front grill. It might as well be a giant dollar sign. People have choice, but geez, what a stupidly ostentatious display of "See what I have here!!!"

reply

Hi Reno :)
Existential crises are for crybabies
Struggles with adult life may be universal but we need to shut up and soldier on
Too much whining these days imo

reply

of course, there are no stoic crybabies!

so true... but that's just the kind of movie this is... i'd like to see a new version, with current generation crybabies... maybe an instagram star instead of the actor charactor, etc... it'll be great as some viewers will take it way too seriously, but others will roll their eyes at the absurdity of it... I like to think I can appreciate both ;)

Well stated
Hope you get it

I think to deal with modern attention spans it would have to be so 'remade' to the point of not resembling the original. And I count myself in those low attention spans; I managed about 2/3 of the way through before turning off in boredom. I did enjoy it to some degree and laughed at most of the dark humour, but ultimately it just seemed pointless. It would've been fascinating to see how a 1983 audience reacted to it.

Definitely due a remake, special effects have come on so much in the past 40 years.

I think it's too specific to it's time, the boomer generation.

I suppose you could make a movie about a group of friends dealing with a suicide, of course, but not quite the same way.

reply

Not a fan of the original at all and I would be even less a fan of a remake about a bunch of whiny Millennial hipster man-boys and empowered chicks sitting around being all ironic and comparing piercings and body mods.

I think it could be interesting to have a SEQUEL to see how their kids turned out, and how well (or not well) what would now be the group of GRANDPARENTS related to their GRANDKIDS.

Perhaps the reason for another REUNION could also be because the child/grandchild of one of them OD's on prescription meds while they're in college? So another funeral brings them all back together again at Harold & Sarah's again???

And they could also have Karen's kids or grandkids be members of Q or another CONSPIRACY MEGA group that attacked the CAPITAL on Jan 6th (due to the way that her husband was also a PURITANICAL CONSERVATIVE type who also said that he could imagine what they said about him as Karen also looks away from him).

So his kids would most likely also be the type to hold those kind of views about others who had more PROGRESSIVE looking points of view.

Then maybe we could also end up with a little Mini VERSION of the INSURRECTION again at the FUNERAL as the 2 different points of view (RED state vs Blue state type of stuff) CLASHED???
