The RT and IMDB scores are baffling...

...in the sense that they seem far too low. This film is a solid 9/10 if not 10/10 on a good day. I don't see how almost anyone over 30 or so can't relate heavily to this film and find it pretty terrific.

Is the hate for this film (from some quarters) based in the fact that it mostly centers around upper-middle class people and their problems? If so I find that incredibly short-sighted. Do people typically complain about being exposed to lower-class problems in movies?

It's simply because in 2019 terms it's a very boring movie. It hasn't held up well. I'd generously give it a 5/10 for the acting so the IMDB 7.2 seems way too high to me.

6/10 for me. I don't mind it being a talky picture with nothing in way of action--there are certainly other movies of that type that I've enjoyed--but by the end I felt like it was much ado about nothing. It's literally a movie about a bunch of people sitting around and having conversations, and that's a problem when the conversations aren't particularly interesting.

Where it excels, as you mentioned, is in the great acting. It has one of the best casts I've ever seen assembled in a single film.
