Locations - bridge?

17 minutes into the film, as I'm rewatching, they are leaving the funeral and crossing an unusual structure that may be a bridge, but I can't see how water would flow under it. Notes say film is shot in South Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia. Anyone know what and where this structure/bridge is?

I first watched this movie with my mum when I was young and that tall bridge that seemed to be built for nothing more than a shallow swampy marsh caught my eye also.
I found this on a Big Chill fan info site;
..."Cat Island Bridge, which links Beaufort and Port Royal"..., where the movie was filmed.

Hey, thanks for that. It hasn't helped me find the bridge on Google Earth or even a good image of it on Google image search, but it has told me there are a heck of a lof ot Cat Islands out there!

Perhaps the bridge has been replaced in the past 33 years. I know the US has a lot of ageing infrastructure, including many bridges, that needs replacing.

I tried Google mapping it too - I'm wondering if it's Ribaut Road Bridge or possible Lady's Island Bridge... both look like they could be the one we see in the movie..

No, it's known as J.E. McTeer Bridge, Beaufort, South Carolina. Cat Island bridge in located in the Bahamas. In the south there a ton of bridges like this one, some go pretty high and very long, sometimes 10 miles long. I hate those bridges. If there is ever a bad accident or flash flooding, you'll be struck there for hours because there isn't another ramp to get off. The Florida panhandle beach towns have similar bridges.

Thanks for the information! :)

Yep. J.E. McTeer Bridge. It is on Ladys Island Drive over the Harbor River in Beaufort, SC.
It has changed a little since 1983, it looks like they have built a second bridge next to the old one, making it a 4 lane rather than a 2 lane, but using Google Street view, if you start on the eastern shore of the river, just before the road curves, then cross the bridge slowly, you will get to a spot that has almost the same view/vantage point as in the movie. (Map coordinates 32.393366, -80.667472) Zoom in and compare the skyline. Look for the water tower to the left of the bridge. In the movie the tower is all the way to the left, almost out of frame (so if you are watching a "trimmed" version you might not see it).

Yeah, thanks everyone, especially HennaP whose message was the first one I got notification of. Thumbs up. Travelling from the east side of the river, I also noticed what looks like a gravestone right next to the road. Here we don't mark road deaths in that way, that I've ever seen. People put up flowers and stuff or rough crosses and things like teddybears, but never an engraved piece of stone!
