'The Vooch'

I just had to start a thread commenting on the excellent performance by Paul Carafotes in this film as Vinnie Salvucci. I thought he was outstanding in this film. I loved his final scene where they come into the classroom and arrest him and he screams at Craig T. Nelson, "Help me, Coach...help me Coach!" One of my favorite moments in the film.

I got to agree with you Paul Carafotes was memorable in the role of Vooch. Another line that stands out, Steph - "Hey you still got a shot" (at a scholarship) Vooch - "Yeah for welfare".

The scene with Salvucci being arrested by the detectives was absolutely heartbreaking. Paul Carafotes was indeed excellent as 'The Vooch.'

There was nothing Coach could have done for Vooch unless he was an attorney.

Not true. There were many things Nickerson could have done for the Vucch. He could have appeared as a character witness on Vucch's behalf. He could have gone to the principal with a request for help. He could have talked up pro bono attorneys. Nickerson was the football coach in a small town. He would have had considerable influence.

But the point is, his shock at seeing Salvucci being led away in handcuffs by detectives simply was because his own opinion that Vinny was a loser, was reinforced.

Those are good points, but you are giving Nickerson too much credit. Most coaches like to hitch their wagons to kids who get full college scholarships with a chance of playing in the pros. Why would he go out on a limb for a kid who got arrested for armed robbery and has a fumbling issue? If Nickerson had so much pull where was he when Salvucci's family was struggling financially?
