The most underrated movie of the 80s

There is something special about this film. OUTSTANDING cast (young for most part)... Cruise, Penn, and Thompson all have outstanding performances. The soundtrack is so 80's and I love it. But the thing I like the most about this film is that it captures small town life perfectly. The gloomy outlook, the importance of high school football, everything! The atmosphere is wonderful. Lets not forget Craig T Nelson either!!

It makes me kind of sad that this movie doesnt get more recognition, especially because two stars from the 80s kind of get their start here. I know Cruise did Taps before this but this is his first lead role. I believe it's also Lea Thompsons first big role as well as Chris Penn's.

I love this movie. It is one of my favorites. If you are on the fence about watching it for the first time please believe me.... This is a classic 80s movie and deserves a solid 8 star imdb rating.

It's because the most popular teen movies from the 80's were about kids from middle or upper middle class backgrounds, not common working people trying to keep a union job to pay their bills and put food on the table! The popular teen movies were about trying to get the boy or girl, have people understand your differences, or try to beat the ski champion!

Agreed.

The food came and so did I. 

Agreed. Just saw it for the first time. I had thought it was the Shelly Long/Mexico movie... wasn't crazy about the ending Appalachian towns are heart-breaking enough so probably for the best.

Probably because Flashdance had got in a bit earlier with a very similar story and constructed movie, which was of course, a huge hit. I agree though that in terms of the casting, this does have quite a bit of historical interest.🐭
