Why Mark Gregory walks funny...

If you ever thought Mark Gregory walked like he had a wide stick shoved up his arse, you wouldn't be too far off the mark. Only Da Hammer could tell it like this:

"Mark Gregory was uhh...he made no footprints in the snow when he walked. It took 'em a long long time to teach Mark how to walk. And if you watch him closely when he makes these long walks, he walks very stiff and straight up to keep from makin' that swishiness that he had, 'cause Castellari met 'im on the street. He was not an actor, he was a guy...he was a bodybuilder. He saw him in the gym and he says "C'mon, I'm gonna make you an actor," and he had a great physique but he made no footprints in the snow and back in '85 it wasn't cool then, 'cause everybody wasn't outta the closet at that time. But everybody is out now, so it's cool. But, in '85, it wasn't as cool. It was a LOT of work to get Mark to stop that swishy strut."

(from Fred Williamson's interview on the BRONX WARRIORS DVD from Shriek Show)

Castellari even has a giggle remembering the nasty things the real-life Hell's Angels said to Gregory during his walk from the body of his impaled pal to Fred Williamson's car early in the film, none of it recorded since the soundtrack was all put in later. Fortunately, he says, Gregory had no idea what they were saying about him!

Kinda puts into question that story in Gregory's IMDB bio about his "fiance" submitting his photo to Fulvia film.

Oh, it doesn't just make his character look stupid.....

But really, I'm not sure how much more obvious Fred Williamson could be in his choice of words regarding Gregory's demeanor. I mean, "no footprints in the snow??" Come ON...

No.

By all accounts, Gregory was gay, and it took A LOT of effort on the part of the filmmakers to cover it up. I guess Fred Williamson was beating a little too far around the bush after all!

Good one! I never caught that!

Haha. Oh my. Anyone notice how all the posters for Mark's films depict him as a fierce and vicious presence when he's very clearly not? Luckily for me, I enjoy mindless Italian exploitation and Mark's funny little strut. And on top of that, he's (for lack of a better word) hot.
Sometimes, cinematically speaking, I'm a very easy lady to please.

The posters for most of the Italian post-apoc films were the best things about them! Although the paintings of Mark Anthony on the posters for his films represent what are probably the most extreme digressions from reality ever seen in movie advertising. Regardless of his sexual orientation, those 'roid ragin' monstrosities depicted on the posters all but guarantee huge disappoinment—and some serious laughs—when the actual hero swishes onto the screen.

reply

Oh certainly. I love the over-exaggerated nature of posters for Italian exploitation films, as they really make you want to see them. In Mark's case, not only did his colorful paper depictions give him 'roid rage, but a whole new hardened face as well! The poster for Thunder is the only one out of his brief filmography to even come close to honestly portraying him.

I also love that Mark has war paint smeared on his face and utilizes a bow and arrow to convince the viewer that he can be passed off for Native American.

i bloody noticed his walk, and damn is it annoying. Yeah i kinda generalised that it meant he was probably gay, and look, it seems he was!!!

reply

Oh man! I remember seeing that as a kid. My mom rented it. The best part of the entire flick is the ending where the kids are playing "cowboys and indians" and the little indian kid says "thunder will never die!" int hat high pitched child voice that was in EVERY italian dubbed flick. awesome.

Both Mark and Stefania were 17 years old at the time, so maybe it had something to do with legality.
What I do find amusing is that even though she and Mark couldn't have much physical interaction in 1990: Bronx Warriors, it was perfectly acceptable for her to be raped to death in another film of her father's.

If Enzo didn't mind his child being raped to death in one film, surely kissing the hero of another would not have been a problem—unless, of course, it was because that hero made no footprints in the snow!!

And by the way, pretty_baby_26, the film is available as part of a bargain priced three-pack from Shriek show called The Post Apocalyptic Triple Feature, which also includes special editions of 2019 AFTER THE FALL OF NEW YORK and THE NEW BARBARIANS.

I had first assumed he was gay, but gave the IMDb bio the benefit of the doubt and just chalked it up to youthful exhibitionism. Remember, teenagers are very image conscious and ones with outstanding physical gifts are more so.

Well hell the denifiton of fiance must have changed over the years. haha. Either way I found him to look kinda odd, didn't think he was gay.

I hate everyone and everything.

Annoying walk and I actually was laughing watching him swish throught the movie. He looked all of 17 years old and not a bad ass

reply

I never saw this movie, however, one of my coworkers from Gucci on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue where I used to work in the early 1980s, saw this movie in the theater shortly after it was released in New York in April 1983. She told us in that movie, she thought that Mark Gregory was a f*g because of the way he walked and proceeded to mimic him by walking and strutting her shoulders. We all laughed.

reply

I used to work with someone who walked like that....especially on Mondays. He claimed it was from "Horse back riding".
