Whiz Kids on DVD

I've started a petition to put the tv series "Whiz kids" Season 1 on DVD that aired 1983-1984 starring Matthew Laborteaux.

I don't know a single person in my circle of associates, who knows this show ever aired. Accept myself. Yet, the one thing I desire, is to hear the opening song again. I swear it's a Mozart composition on a synth. I say; put the show on DVD, I'd buy it, absolutely. Heck, If they can put "Land of the Lost" on DVD, you can put ANYTHING on DVD.

You can download the theme, see 2 pictures and look over an episode guide here.

Ralph does not look like a VIC20 on the picture.

The theme is a pretty good abbreviation of the first movement of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major. The 2nd movment of that concerto is well known among movie fans for being used in "Elvira Madigan", and thus shows up on many compilations of classical music used in films, but I still prefer the first movement because of its use on Whiz Kids...

BTW, there was a crossover episode of Simon & Simon in which some of the Whiz Kids popped up. Simon & Simon has a good chance of showing up on DVD, so at least that bit of Whiz Kids has a chance of coming out on DVD. Otherwise, no matter how much I like the show, I just can't envision it showing up on DVD, unless one of the stars suddenly hits it huge and they dig it up to cash in on that...

reply

I never remembered Whiz Kids poping up on Simon and Simon.
I do remeber simon brother poping up on Whiz Kids.
Was it one of the originals or some other actors? Their profiles don't show them to have been on Simon & Simon

reply

Check their profiles again, and scroll down to the bottom where it lists TV appearances; they did do guest spots on Simon & Simon.

reply

I have all of the episodes deteriorating on VHS, I am transfering it to DVD, although it will be lesser quality. I looked through the episodes and not only do the kids show up on Simon and Simon, but AJ Simon ( I think, I forgot which is which) and of course the girl has a teen crush on him when he shows up on whiz kids, he was doing undercover work in a warehouse, If you want, I can get you the name of the episode.

reply

AJ was the blonde one and Rick is "Major Dad" or Gerald Raney.
It was not hard to to get them mixed up. One would think AJ would be the rough one that does things half-done while "Rick" would be more proper for the other brother.

Please do look up the epsisode.

I am finding that IMDB has a lot of missing info.
On "Party of Five" is where Neve Campbell got her famous, but IMDB does not even have her as doing the show on her profile.

Thanks

Trent

Man, I would love to buy a copy of that DVD you are compiling with the episodes of Whiz Kids. Please, drop me an e-mail at [email protected].

I remember the Simon & Simon crossover, I even remember one of the female whiz kids had a crush on AJ Simon.

I remember this 80s show, it used to be on around 5pm on a saturday evening, wasnt ralph the computer a commodore 64?, Im the only one out of all my mates who remember this show. At the time i thought it was really cool, and wished my computer would talk and do the things Richies did. DAGNAMMIT. If there a petition going around id sign it as i would love to see these episodes again.

reply

If I remember correctly, it was a VIC 20, which was a precessor (Sorry my spelling) to the Commodore 64, had less memory and in all more handicapped than the Commodore (as if the Commodore 64 had "the ultimate power :)"

I remember this show, it ran in Iceland in 1984 if I remember correctly, and I was a big fan of it. I would like to sign the petition too. I like old TV shows, specially the ones that don't age very well like this one. I mean, he used a VIC 20 to control satellite dishes !

I did the technical consulting on the Whiz Kids. The computer was a working IMSAI 8080 which ran on CP/M and had a whopping 64K of RAM. We used it as a prop, because it has front panel lights that had a good visual effect. The computer didn't perform any function on the show, other than being a prop, but I had used it since 1979, first with WordStar and then adding dBase II.

Most of the other computer components on the show were just props. We did have a robotic arm that was controlled by another, off-stage computer. And we had a primitive voice synthesis box, that was the voice of the computer.

I would like to get some or all of the episodes on vhs or dvd. Do you have any copies of the show or have any idea how I could get them.

reply

Bro if you know how to get copies of the show drop us a line. There is an expanding list of fans who remember the show and are looking for decent copies of the episodes.

reply

Hey Spaced-6... Count me in 100% I would looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove to see this come out on DVD or VHS.

reply

Another fan of the Whiz Kids... I voted for it on www.tvshowsondvd.com where respective owner companies actually do take a look at the figures / votes.

Anyway, this was one of my favourite shows growing up, although it only ran for one season, it has remained clearly etched in my memory! I used to love the whole 80's suburb feel and am desperate to see it on dvd.

reply

I now have all of these available on DVD!

reply

How did you manage to get that?

reply

Did you have them on tape from the 80's?

Anyway I loooked on Ebay and there's a "Whiz Kids Matthew Labourteaux" listing for a video which has got absolutely no relevance to the tv show or the actor... it's some kids tv programme! How dumb!

I am interested in finding out how to obtain these DVD's. I was not fortunate enough to see a lot of the episodes. I thought Jeffrey Jacquet was stellar on "Mork & Mindy," and would love to see his work on "Whiz Kids"! I wonder what he's up to now! I did a web search, and came up with a guy by the same name who writes for a paper called the "Wyoming Star Tribune," and one who is at a company called "New world Entertainment," which distributes Jewish films. Somehow, I doubt either one is him!

Would love to get a copy.

reply

Yeah! Bring it back on DVD! I loved that show. It got me interested in computers as I was growing up (14 years old or so). I also had a crush on Andrea Elson and thought the coolest guy was Jeremy, although I guess everybody wanted to be as clever as Ritchie (being told I looked like Matthew was good enough). A talking computer with all these gizmos? What a dream for a teenage kid! I loved the music (even during the show some classical numbers would be played, right?). I remember the Simon&Simon crossover. Needless to say, I was a bit jealous of AJ Simon!

I did add my vote to your list. It would be very nice get Whiz Kids to DVD and see it again.. After.. over 20 years..

I would be interested in seeing if I can get a decent copy on DVD.
The copies I have( all season 1) are abit scratchy.
They were recorded off an old vcr back in the 80's.
I rate it about 6/10.
They are ok to watch, but there is a lot of tracking problems with them.
If anyone has a decent copy, I would love to hear from you.
Please feel free to email me [email protected]

The full 18 episodes.

Not brilliant quality but watchable all the same.

Yes, it is the Mozart tune at the beginning played on a synth.

£20 for 2 dvd's (including postage and packaging) in the UK.

No artwork available.
