Question about the ending of this...? SPOILERS

I just saw this on tv, hadn't seen it for quite a long time. It has also been a long time since I read the book. I don't remember Father Ralph dying at the end of the book. I thought they continued a relationship where they met when they could, and the book stopped before his death. Or am I just imagining this? If anyone knows, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks much!!

Whoever responded you before deleted their own posts, so I don't know what was said.

Ralph dies in the book even before the end of it, because the book goes on for another section about Justine and how she comes to terms with her relationship with Rainer. Ralph's death in the book is portrayed quite differently than in the miniseries - Meggie is basically berating him for not realizing that Dane was his son, and Ralph begins to have a heart attack, but Meggie doesn't notice at first. By the time she does, he's in so much pain he can't speak - he wants to ask her to forgive him but there's some sentimental blather about how she holds his face in her hands and he can see in her eyes that she'd already forgiven him long ago. You can see I didn't much like the way this scene was written in the book.

Ralph died in both the book and the movie but the movie does a way better job than the book.
The book goes on to talk about Justine after Ralph's death and so we kind of lose interest as we now know it's the end of Ralph and Meggie. The movie ends it Ralph's death and with him acknowledging that he was selfish and pretty much an idiot and he cant believe he didn't choose love. She forgives him of course as she can't help herself when it comes to Ralph.
Book and movie both great but for the very first time I would say the movie wins!

I'd agree with the ^ above. Ralph had some kind of fatal incident (heart?) as he was alone with Meggie in the rose garden. He makes a few things clear. He seems confident he could get forgiveness in Meggie. In the book he knows he is dying while the film he does a slip into unconsciousness.
