weird things I'm noticing along the way

I'm in the jungle portion now, and the costumes have become bizarre. Vanilla and Gotho wearing bow ties and ruffled tuxedo tops with no sleeves and purple and yellow kilts/shorts. Coconna wearing fairy wings on her outfit. Really weird fashion.

Chirico wears an oxygen mask on his uniform when driving the AT, but none of the other guys in his unit do (in the jungle section, which is where I am now). They all can breathe fine without one.

The Vietnam Russian roulette thing seems taken from "The Deerhunter."

Fyana and Ypsilon are Perfect Soldiers whose reflexes are supposed to be unbeatable yet they cannot defeat their commander who effortlessly bests them in that spear dueling they do. Maybe he is revealed to be a Perfect Soldier later on, I don't know. But he talks to them as if they are and he is not.

Well, I finished the show now and the story seemed to fall apart as it went along. Very disappointing, as I watched this immediately following "Fang of the Sun: Dougram" and thought that one was so impressively written.

SPOILERS

There was a lot of great atmospheric stuff in there but the plot really went off the deep end with the events on Quent. It starts out as a gritty semi-realistic mecha show then transitions into teleport systems and Chirico being a god. The climax turns into a complete rip-off of the end of 2001 with Chirico removing the memory modules from H.A.L., er "Wiseman." The entire planet blows up a few seconds after Chirico and Fyana walk out of Wiseman's brain (and the show doesn't pay any attention or sympathy to the loss of the entire population of Quent), yet they both survive somehow, but then decide to be put into a tube and jettisoned into space. Whatever. Cannot see myself recommending this to show to anyone. It had a nostalgic kick to it as I really enjoyed the music and have always wanted to know the story behind those classic VOTOMS mecha designs, but the reality was much less than I hoped for. Basically a pastiche of stuff taken from other movies and TV shows smushed together: Vietnam movies, Star Wars, 2001, Gundam (the uniforms of the Gilgamesh). Bleh.
