henry crawford...YEEESSSSHH HH!

OMG as soon as he spoke he made my skin crawl. How can any woman find this sort of man the least bit attractive. Sorry to say be acted like such a douche!

reply

Actually, I think he did an excellent job of acting like a douche. So, while I disliked the character, I liked his performance.

my god its full of stars

It's a pity, because in the book, he's rather appealing, even though you know he's merely shallow and charming. He has depth enough to sense that Fanny would ultimately bring out the best in him. Whenever I'm reading the book, I'm rooting for him. I always pause half way through and fantasize that he simply tosses her in his carriage and gallops away with her.

But then it wouldn't be Jane Austen anymore. It'd be Kathleen E. Woodiwiss.

reply

LOL! yes I agree with you. I'm also rooting for Henry but JA didn't like to write about reformed rakes so all her villains end badly. It would have been nice to have at least one that changes and gets the girl in the end!
I liked how this guy Robert Burbage plays Henry. what happened to him, I wonder? he seems to have stopped acting in the 1990s but he has a familiar face, and I can't figure out where I have seen him before.

reply

I agree - I found myself hoping Henry truly was reformed, although I knew that Fanny was destined for Edmund. It made me love this version all the more, because I could see myself being swayed by Henry's seeming sincerity, thus highlighting all the more how valuable Fanny's staunch principles were!

I thing the actor was miscast. He's so ugly and I found nothing to recommend him to any woman...

reply

Well, in the book he is described as not being handsome, but having a lot of charm. Here's what it says about him:"[He] was not handsome: no, when they first saw him he was absolutely plain."

Maria and Julia discuss this in the film when they are in the carriage riding home from the Parsonage.

Personally, I think Robert Burbage did a good job with the role, as he did make the character grow on me more and more as the film went on, just like book Henry grows on the Bertram girls over time, but to each his own. :)

I have to say in parts I wanted him and Fanny to end up together. I think he really did come to care for her, love her and might have reformed.

Ive not read the book though so he could be so much worse!

There are people who've read the book who like Henry. I've read the book and I despise him.

Our family is neatly split into those who believe that Fanny could have reformed Henry and they could have been happy together and those who think that once he'd had his wicked way, he'd have reverted to type and tossed her to the wolves.

There are about 30 people in the former category and me by myself in the latter.
