Good review. Glad to see that he likes it for what it is and not what people make it out to be. I am astounded whenever people say Manimal had bad effects, when in reality it was like a mini-version of what people saw in American Werewolf In London and Howling. Sure it was cheesy, but that was the charm of the show, it was family entertainment and fun. I think it can very well be remade today for mature audiences with darker storyline, it had so much potential, just got introduced in the wrong time.

People who "remember" bad effects are the same ones who "remember" that he only ever turned into a panther and a hawk. Basically they're not remembering it at all! The effects were great, and it's remarkable what they acheieved back then, and on a TV series budget. I'm not going to pretend that it was the world's greatest show or anything - it's frustratingly shallow at times, and mistakes were made - but I think it stands up well today. It's a shame they didn't get the chance to make more.

it had so much potential, just got introduced in the wrong time.

It also had the wrong timeslot.

I recall seeing Larson in a 1983 interview on ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT complaining about NBC scheduling MANIMAL against CBS' DALLAS (the number one show on the planet at the time) and he said that whenever they schedule your show for 9pm Friday nights, the network executives always say the same thing, that "DALLAS is dying, DALLAS is dying, it peaked two or three years ago with 'Who Shot J.R.?' --- but DALLAS is not dying; I think it's one of the best produced shows on television..." (which, at the time, was true --- this was before DALLAS got into season-long dreams and multiple Miss Ellie's).

But even with a better timeslot, it's hard to tell what might have happened. Sci-fi shows tend to do better in syndication and in memory, but usually struggle to survive their network runs even under the best of circumstances.
