Which actor do you think played Rochester the best?

For me the best is Timothy Dalton. When I read the book now it is he I see as Rochester and I can hear his voice saying his words. He becomes Rochester completely and vanishes into the character. He is brilliant in the romantic scenes between Rochester and shows how much Rochester loves her and is so tender.

He's amazing in the scene where he is trying to persuade Jane to stay with him after she learns about Bertha, he shows us this mans despair, fear and love.

I think it helps that he gets to do everything from the book and the series lets him and the other actors take their time with scenes and dialogue. In this series nothing is rushed and you really get to know the characters and Timothy gets to bring real depth to Rochester.

A close second is George C. Scott, he is so intense and you can feel how tortured and lonely he is. I just wish that the 1970 film had been longer and been able to show more scenes from the book.

Go to bed Frank or this is going to get ugly .

Timmy Dalton is the best Rochester I've seen. Even his somewhat handsomeness can't make him less believable. Michael Jayston of the 1973 version is my close second. Toby Stephens who also "suffers" from better looks than the book version is also enjoyable as third choice. Honestly, I don't like any of the other Rochesters so far as much as these three.

Agreed, Timothy was definitely the best I've seen so far.
