Original language French or English?

The information on imdb seems to have a big contradiction. I guess someone f'd up. Which part is correct?

The trivia page indicates that English was the original language:

<Andy Heyward came up with the idea for Inspector Gadget in 1981 while working on "Dynomutt, Dog Wonder" (1978). He wrote the pilot episode script himself, which was produced for television in 1982.>

However, the alternate versions page suggests otherwise.

<When dubbed into English, virtually all of the major cast had their names changed. Sophie was renamed Penny, Fino was renamed Brain, Dr. Gang became Dr. Claw and Chief Gonthier became Chief Quimby.>

I'm really confused here. What was the written language of the "real" cartoon?

There should be a FAQ entry about this.

I'd say french as the creators are mostly french, but it's probably better in english as the chief reason to watch it is Don Adams

It premiered in the U.S. on December 4, 1982. It was first stripped on September 1983, with the French version following suit a month later.

So it should be watched in English.
