Bette Davis/Anne Baxter

I read in B.D. Hyman's book 'My Mother's Keeper' that Bette Davis only signed on for this show for the $$...I believe Spelling offered her $100,000 per ep. Davis supposedly thought very little of Spelling, so I'm sure he was more than happy to replace her after she had her stroke. My question is, I wonder if he was catty enough to replace her with Anne Baxter just to play off the 'All About Eve' casting resemblance. Ironic that Davis outlived both Baxter and the run of the series!

I was going to ask the same thing and ponder the same thing. It's certainly the way it looks, but that is cheesy, to say the least, as Davis wasn't automatically equated with All About Eve, and there were no attempts to reunite the two women on morning talk shows or The Tonight show. No one was talking about All About Eve into the 80s when this show came out.

I've been recollecting Falcons Crest as well, and from what I see, it appears the show was deliberately kept on the air during Reagan's presidency, as tho it were a constant reminder to him or something? I think the show outlasted his eight years, but I guess it would spill over into Bush's term, like he would have cared.

Strange the way Hollywood does things, isn't it?

In his autobiography, Aaron Spelling claimed that when he cast Anne Baxter, the All About Eve connection was furthest from his mind. He only realized the fact when Baxter told him she'd have to talk to Davis to get her approval; Baxter didn't want to be stepping on Davis's toes.

When Davis recovered, a few of her biographers said she was invited back to the show but she was still hesitant as the strokes she suffered took a severe toll on her physical appearance. And in her own book "This 'n That,' Davis said she declined to return as she was unhappy with the scripts. She mentioned one script for an episode in which her character Laura Trent had to deal with Victoria Cabot's (Baxter) addiction to pain killers. I believe this script was filmed with Brolin's character taking on the tasks originally earmarked for Laura Trent.

Davis never wanted to do the pilot but it was B.D Hyman who persuaded her to do it. After all, her mother had always been her cash cow.
