Did the show ever explain who the Hitchhiker actually was or give him a story of his own? In the Twilight Zone is was always apparent that Serling was simply a narrator, and Tales of the Crypt managed to work the Crypt Keeper himself into a couple of episodes, so did The Hitchhiker do anything similar?

I never saw all 85 episodes, but I doubt it. Besides, that is what made the Hitchhiker so unique and special. He was a mysterious person who knew all about the strangers he came across and what was going to happen to them. If they explained his origin, he wouldn't seem so mysterious and cool anymore.
