Probably what happened is the writers thought the Beholder looked like a cool monster to send the kids up against and it wasn't until most of the animation was complete that someone actually read the Monster Manual entry and thought "Oh crud! It would totally slaughter those kids! We have to find a way out!" The writers then looked around in desperation for a deus ex machina to save them and someone said "I know! Flowers! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder right? Won't it be ironic if that saying was a clue to how to defeat them?" The D&D saavy writers facepalmed and the people in charge said "Go with it! Kids are dumb, they won't get it anyway."

Uh...and they were right? What kids are going to know a D&D beastiary?

PS 'Savvy' is spelled with two V's not two A's...Savvy?

"Well...I've seen enough. Come on Charlie, we're going home."

Yeah, I loved this show when I was 10. Now, at 40, I have it on DVD. And this is the first I've heard that the beholder comes from some other source.

At 7 years old, I didn't even know this was based on a game. I just loved Sword & Sorcery movies and this was right up my alley. I don't think they were trying to say flowers themselves are a weakness for the Beholders. But they're a metaphor for beauty in general. It's kind of a moral tale like G.I. Joe and He-Man. You shouldn't actually base any gameplay experience on the show, though most of the Creatures and characters are featured in the D&D universe.

Its D&D. If you need dragonsbane to defeat the dragon pumped up on magic then you go out and quest for it. It didnt exist till then. Same for the flower in the cartoon. We do not know what it really was or exactly why it effected the beholder so.

Was the flower some rare herb that is deadly poison to beholders?
Was the beholder under some curse that if it was presented with a specific type of flower, it was defeated?
Did Dungeonmaster or someone else enchant the flower beforehand?

Like alot of things in the cartoon its never explained.

How would you know? Have you ever tried giving one? Could be the start of a beautiful friendship.

I just watched this episode and cannot believe what unadulterated rubbish it is.

Nostalgia certainly does give you rose tinted glasses.
