DVD version

It may be my memory but when I first watched the series when it was released in Australia I am sure that there was more detail into how the Australian Labor Party (ALP) lost control of the Senate.

In the DVD they do mention that the Premier of Victoria (or was it New South Wales) after the death of an ALP senator with a Liberal replacement (eventually changed to an Independant). I am sure that in the original they also showed that the Premier of Queensland (Jo-Bjelke Petersen) did similar on the 9th September 1975 when Senator Milliner (ALP) died and was replaced by Albert Field (another Independant).
