I loved this show when I was a kid!

How did this show not last? Especially in the time of shows like the a-team, Knight Rider, Airwolf, StreetHawk? It was right after Tron and had similiar CG technology. What happened that this show didn't last? was the writing that bad.

Out of all the people I know, only myself and my older brother remembers Automan. They think we're crazy or we dreamt it up. A lot of them don't remember Street Hawk. I mean, come on!

It is a wonderful show. I just saw it again. There were tons of stuff I never noticed about it as a kid. I was incredibly surprised when I saw it again. If you were a fan back then, you will certainly not change your mind if you view it again. The self irony and humour is absolutely everywhere. In short it rocks. It's funny and it's full of great 80's music....oh and all the auto-stuff (car, chopper, plane, bike, blue suit) still looks cool.

Many people say the same thing, and so do I. Those who remembers it are thrilled when they talk to someone else who has seen it, because very few have actually seen it. I have a close friend who had also seen it, and I just happened to talk about a show I remembered about a guy in a blue suit, and he remembered it as well, but none of us remembered the name. We were just little kids when the show aired. Then we eventually found more people who remembered the show, but none of them knew the name as well. Eventually I found out the name through some clever (allright, obvious) use of the internet, and managed to download an episode. It was bliss, although the show's supposed greatness had faded just a tad :)

My mom and I loved this show. We were sad to see it go. I haven't actually seen an episode in over 20 years. When the Sci-Fi Channel first went online, they aired reruns of this show, but my bitch-ass cable provider wouldn't carry it and didn't do so for another 3 years.

Maybe it was a truly awful show and wouldn't hold up through my adult eyes. But regardless of that, the truth is that special effects heavy sci-fi shows are doomed to fail. This goes for everyone except Star Trek, but even that show was on the verge of cancellation for most of its original three year run. The fact is the effects make these type of shows too expensive to be profitable.

Battlestar Galactica was consistently in the top 20 every week, but yet ABC cancelled it after one season. Why? At $750,000 an episode, it was the most expensive show of its day. It seemed to make more sense financially to produce shows that cost a fraction of that and bring in just as many if not more viewers.

Don't hold your breath - its taken 8 years for Charmed to come out, and Robin of Sherwood, which was from around the same time period as Automan, just came out on dvd about a year or so back. The VHS set was available almost 5 years ago. Maybe if ABC or whoever owns Automan gets desperate enough...

They are showing it on Bravo Sat18th all day with Manimal.

I loved this as a kid - however, I would recommend anyone who loved it TO NEVER WATCH IT AGAIN. You'll feel lied to, all those years thinking it was great, u see it now... its cringe inducing

reply

Probably because of the Nielsen ratings. It's like 5000 families determine what stays and what goes.

reply

Well those families that did the Nielsen ratings were not thinking about other people you know. I have sat and watched shows that were just the worst to watch and they remained on television for some reason or another that I could not understand as to why though. People just are not very intelligent because they want to watch something else. I remember watching this at 11 years old and I loved this show a lot! Especially seeing cursor when it would be attached to Heather Thomas poster because she was the hottest woman around at that time. I have not seen this show in like I believe 24 years. That is a long time you know and I miss it too!

just finished watching it again and it is good simple cheesy fun. very funny in places. Wagner plays the role just right with the perfect blend of supreme confidence mixed with utter innocence. It kind of plays like an 80s cartoon series more than a live action show.

Yeah, I loved it, too!
along with Manimal (Only 7 episodes, REALLY?!?) and Riptide!!!
oh, and The Wizard!

Chase these clouds away, I hate this Sunless Saturday

reply

I enjoyed those shows as well. Don't really know why Manimal didn't last. It had a pretty well known actor at the time in Simon MacCorkindale. I guess maybe it was just bad writing perhaps. As for Riptide, that was a great show and pretty reliable show for NBC for a few years. I am surprised you don't see it more in reruns anywhere. And the Wizard was very cool! It is funny how you can remember show so fondly from your childhood.

reply

A lot of people liked this show as a kid. Shame it did not continue.

Its that man again!!
