Best Show EVER made.

This show is so hillarious, I love the narccist hero. The episode where he starts to dance like john travolta had me rolling on the floor. I LOVE automan. Cornyest show ever.

I agree.

Yeah. Auto had an ego, but despite his "all-knowing" (since he was a holographic computer program, and thus had access to all computer databanks), he was also very naive about the human aspect of the world outside the computer. This gave him a charming, almost child-like quaility.

Of course, having a handsome actor like Chuck Wagner play him helped, too...

I really loved this show and did not understand as to why they canceled it. That is the whole problem of the 80's they would introduce some shows with some great ideas but would never last very long like The Master, Streethawk, and this one as well! I loved the show when I was 11 years old and was very upset when they removed it. They will have shows that are far more worse than anything on TV and everyone loves those shows for some reason or another. I never could understand that at all. It was different like no one has ever thought up and they have to cancel the show.

It was a great era while it lasted though wasn't it? Streethawk, Knight Rider, Airwolf, The A-Team...

’Cause there’s thunder in your heart... Every move is like lighning!

reply

It was a great era to have a lot of great shows like you have listed Fluke Skywalker!

I vaguely remember watching this show when I was a kid. It was pretty cool, and considering that it came out in 1983, I'm really surprised that no one mentioned the similaries of this show to one of my most favorite all-time movies, TRON, which came out one year before. Wonder if the same effects guys on TRON worked on this show. . .Hmmmmmmmmmm. . . . . .

reply

Automan had a sidekick named Cursor, who was kinda like an electronic Tinkerbell. Cursor could produce Automan's car out of thin air by tracing the outline. Automan's car could make true 90 degree turns, just like the bikes in Tron. Yeah, it porbably was a Tron rip-off, although I never made the connection when I was a kid. Loved the show. Ranks up there with the Greatest American Hero and Manimal as one of the great short-lived '80's series.

reply

It might not have gotten canceled if it aired as "Autogirl"!

I'm just a patsy!

Ah I knew someone besides me was thinking of those similarities.

This show along with Airwolf, Manimal, Highwayman, and Street Hawk were among my favorites. I don't know why I never got into Knight Rider, just never liked it. Automan was very creative, like Larson's many other shows. Just can't understand why it didn't continue, must be budget right? With all those special effects and usage of choppers and fancy cars, must have cost a lot.

Now that Street Hawk is coming to DVD, I hope Automan, Manimal and Highwayman too make it to DVD.

reply

I have the complete Automan in DivX format, which can be simply transcoded to DVD format for standard DVD players.

PM me if you'd love a bit of Automan back in your life... =]

Looks like I picked the wrong day to quit shooting smack...

It was a fun attempt to ride the home computer wave of the early 80s.

Its that man again!!

reply

if i remember correctly, from the news reports back when the show was cancelled, was because Desi Arnez jr, felt like a backseat driver, to the show's frontman, Chuck Wagner, a.k.a Automan

Poor Desi, he wasn't getting the spotlight he wanted, and cracked the *beep*

"...eeeEEEKK!...I mean, aaaaARGGH!..."

reply

Well, that was stupid, I see his career has gone nowhere. Isn't better to be on a fantastic show? I especially loved the one where he was disco dancing. I really liked all of them. I was a computer nerd, so I really liked the computer stuff in there. I got kinda depressed when the show went off the air.

Why did the 80's have such good shows, in other decades, they'd come few & far between.
