Ever seen "Joey"?

reply

haha amen. I know I've seen many, many worse ones but I can't think of any right now.

reply

beverly hills buntz(based on dennis franz character from hill street blues

reply

I don't even think that one lasted a season. At least AfterMASH lasted 1 1/2 seasons.

reply

I would like to know what idiot's voted this the worst spin off of all time, cause there full of it!!!

Not saying this was a great show, but is sure hell could have been! To many damn changes, to many characters leaving etc. but i think the first season is passable, and if it ever comes on dvd, ill be picking it up.

reply

If this was such a good show as you all claim it to be, why hasn't it had a DVD release? Why was it ONLY mentioned on the Martinis & Medicine collection by a short, off-screen conversation between Jamie Farr and Harry Morgan in one of the features? It's almost as if Fox has something to hide.

reply

Kind of wish they would so I can get a decent viewing of the show. The episodes posted on You Tube a while back didn't have the best picture quality.

reply

Joey lasted two full seasons at 46 episodes. AfterMash lasted 1-1.2 seasons at 29 episodes.

Just a continuation of the travesty that M*A*S*H itself had become by its 9th season. They kept making them because their ratings were still high, but that show was downright awful by then.

reply

I actually thought it was pretty good. Not great, but OK.
I was wondering how a show can be top rated one season and in the toilet the next.

"Just a continuation of the travesty that M*A*S*H itself had become by its 9th season."

Agreed, but the show was pretty bad before the 9th season IMO.

No one says it, but I think MASH is why most sitcoms want to go out while they are still funny whether than beating out shows until people stop watching.

Other spinoffs that were worse:

Joanie Loves Chachi
The Ropers
Gloria
Blansky's Beauties
Archie Bunker's Place
Flo

You are kidding right? MASH was easily as good in Season 11 as it was in Season 1.

Am I kidding? Check out MASH on www.jumptheshark.com. You can look at it and say, "never jumped" is the top vote getter, but there are several other "jumps" that get well over 100 votes each.

Compare this to other shows like Scrubs and The Simpsons and you will see a drastic difference.

You are actually the first person that I have ever heard claim this. I don't deny your liking (or anyone else's), but most MASH fans I know agree that the show lost it at some point--they just debate where.

Sorry, but those don't even get mentioned her.

Granted, Voyage and Enterprise were not really good shows, but they by no means are some of the worst spin-offs ever.

And DS9, forget about it. Many Trekkers I know just plain loved that show--myself included.

Fred

reply

Didn't they all last more than a season and a half? Each had their own little followings (Enterprise was probably smaller than others.) I'd love to check out that Radar-pilot though!

reply

I've never disagreed with someone more in my life, GunsmokeRocks. The idea that MASH lost anything calls into question the viewership of anyone who says that, and I don't care if its 'most' of the fans. If anything it gained something, IE a backbone.

I have no wish to spend my few remaining years grieving for the loss of old friends or their sons.

How long have you had this delusion that you know what you're talking about?

reply

I agree, we're clearly some of the few people on this board who appreciate good drama.

never having seen this.. can't say how good or bad.. BUT I never felt MASH jumped anything.. just after quite a few seasons.. actually I'd dare say even after the THRID.. after the death of Henty.. the show did really tonally change.. sometimes taking on a much darker and somber tone.. which upset many of the haha people..but take an episode, season 9 I believe, Death Takes a Holday.. was fantastic.. also one in saason 11 (I don't know all the seasons and all) but wheh Charles is dealing with a stuttering patient.. with the many cast changes.. and just drastically different characters.. the goofy and inept Frank being replaced with the more straight man type of Charles Amerson Winchester. While it did have many staff changes.. the show was still a sometimes more humorous than the film.. but how people dealt with the madness of war.. and succeded most of the time.

as for WORSE spin offs? Umm.. throw in Top of the Heap, which was later renamed Vinnie and Bobby that was a spin off from Married with Children (starring future Friend Matt Le Blanc) AwwwwwwwwwwFUL.. never even saw the re-tooled Vinny and Bobby.. although Joey Lauren Adams made her debut there as a hot lil jail bait neighbor.. awful show.. Vinnie Vaducci and his dad, which were intro'd on several Married eps.

also.. DS9 was AWFUL? news to me.. I always thought it much like Nex Gen took about four years to firmly find its footing, a tad bit too long really.. BUT.. was a fantastic show that got even better after this stride.. introducing Worf and the Defiant really drastically opened up the world..

'After Mash' is not the worst spinoff in TV history -- not even close. It was an average, ordinary sitcom trying to follow in the footsteps of a classic, and that's always tough to do.
Someone asked about the ratings. In its first season, it was on Monday nights, in the same timeslot 'MASH' had (9 p.m., I think). It was part of a very successful lineup of shows that included 'Newhart.' It finished 15th or so in the ratings.
In its second season, CBS moved it to Tuesday night, where it aired opposite 'The A Team,' at a time when it was a top five show. 'After Mash' tanked as a result and was cancelled.

re: ratings. After MASH was a Top 10 show in its first season. It seems like the time slot change and other meddling killed it dead.

Believe it or not, this show was #1 on Tv Guide's list of worst TV spin-offs.

That's sad. I've seen some of the episodes and they weren't that bad.

I think the biggest problem with After MASH is that it kept feeding off of its predecessor and didn't try to become its own independent show. There were constant references to M*A*S*H as well as storylines recycled from the show. A spin-off is supposed to be independent of its parent show. Look at The Jeffersons, they barely made any mention of the Bunkers or anything that happened on All in the Family and that show ran 10 years. Happy Days, a spin-off of Love, American Style. It's own independent show. Also ran 10 years. Frasier, independent of Cheers, ran 10 years also. Maude, independent of All in the Family, ran 6 years. My point is, if a show can be independent and not completely duplicate the show from where it spun off, it has a better chance at success. After MASH is nothing but a reHASH.

i dont think its the worst ..ive seen some pretty bad spinoffs.
remember dukes of hazzard - it had a spinoff called enos about the deputy who goes off on his own ,,it failed and he came back to the dukes of hazzard 6 months later.

what about the three's companys' spinoff , three's a crowd about the further adventures of jack tripper ? sucked majorly

and also a spinoff of MASH about Radar called W*A*L*T*E*R ,although technically it was more a one shot tv movie since it wasnt picked up .. i think it would qualify as one of the worst
