Just Watched It Again............

I recently "aquired" the complete series of AFTER MASH on DVD.

Having watched it again after a 25 year gap I was very surprised.

I can't believe FOX hasn't jumped on this as a follow up to their extremely popular M*A*S*H releases.

Let me point out that this is AFTER MASH........NOT M*A*S*H.

IT IS DIFFERENT.

It takes place in a Veteran's Hospital after the Korean War when the GI's have come home.

We follow M*A*S*Hers POTTER, KLINGER, & MULCHAHY as they transition back to civilian life.

Potter comes back to a wife he has been away from off & on their entire marriage. He promises to settle down & retire but is offered the Head Surgeon position in the next city at a VA hospital.

Klinger finds life hard with a Korean bride in the 1950's. He is broke & out of work.

Mulchahy also is looking for direction now that he is a "civilian" chaplan.

To make a long story short they all wind up at the same VA hospital. They have a bumbling "Henry Blake clone" administrator, who is replaced in season 2 by a "Frank Burns clone" administrator.

The stories range from comedic to some VERY hard hitting themes. A surgeon dealing with life on his artificial leg, soldiers who have emotionally shut down after coming home, and a VERY LOVING & DEVOTED wife of a paralyzed soldier who feels the need to have occasional one night stands with strangers to satify her needs.

With so many soldiers coming home from the war TODAY, this series was VERY TOPICAL!!!!!

As much as M*A*S*H was a mirror about the experience of War.......... AFTER MASH was an incredible mirror about the POST WAR experience.

Don't listen to people who have vague recollections of a show they haven't seen in 25 years, or people who have NEVER seen the series at all, but are regurgitating what they have heard others say.

Having just seen it, TRUST ME, it is 10 times better than it's supposed reputation.

Wow, thanks for the review. I'm a big M*A*S*H fan, but never watched this show when it aired originally, I don't remember why. Now I'm itching to find copies.

PLEASE put this in the review section rather than in the comment section.

The review section is so one-sided against AfterMash.

"I recently "aquired" the complete series of AFTER MASH on DVD."

At Bootlegs 'R Us?

"Let me point out that this is AFTER MASH........NOT M*A*S*H."

That's something the producers and writers needed to learn. There were constant throwbacks to its parent series on the show.

"It takes place in a Veteran's Hospital after the Korean War when the GI's have come home."

Yeah, and it's called General General. How creative or clever is that? It isn't.

"They have a bumbling "Henry Blake clone" administrator, who is replaced in season 2 by a "Frank Burns clone" administrator."

I thought you said this was DIFFERENT.

"Having just seen it, TRUST ME, it is 10 times better than it's supposed reputation."

Well how about the show's title: After MASH. What kind of show title is that? They should have called it something more conventional, like "Home Again" or "Back Where We Started". After MASH. That sounds like an advertisement, and a bad one too. "Coming up next after MASH, it's After MASH." Where's the remote?

The show's theme song sucks.

The dialogue is horrible. Check out bestcareanywhere.net, they have a section for After MASH. Download some excerps of dialogue and see what I mean.

If you like the show, that's fine. But a majority of fans think it sucks the big one.

It's been several years since you posted, but thank you for your review indyjones.

I didn't watch this series when it first aired (I recall hearing about it and thinking it sounded like an okay idea), yet I've recently begun viewing the episodes online and have been pleasantly surprised. It's a solid show and not nearly deserving of its horrible reputation. Good production values, some interesting story-lines, and the new characters and location make for an interesting, new dynamic. Is it as good as MASH? Of course not. However, taken on its own it's definitely worth a look-see and deserving of an official release. If nothing else, it does an admiral job of dramatizing/satirizing American life in the early 1950s.

Hey IndyJones -

I realize your thread is about 9 years old and you may never see this, but I'd still like to thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts...I was born well into the original M*A*S*H series' primetime run, but I grew up watching late night reruns and it was one of my favorite shows.

I've heard about the After M*A*S*H spin-off series a few times, but until this afternoon I've always forget to investigate whether of not it was worth checking out. Your review has piqued my interest enough that I'm going to dig around until I find the season and a half that it aired. It seems like every show that has ever aired is just a few clicks away these days, so I doubt it will take long to find.

Thanks,

Patrick

I think like all things that follow something so great, they tend to be the victim of high expectations and unfair comparisons. M*A*S*H was in a class all by itself. Like many on this board and its own board, I grew up watching it and consider it my all time favorite series. It's also the only TV show I've ever bought the full DVD set for, even though I've seen each episode multiple times. After M*A*S*H is not M*A*S*H, nor should anyone expect it to be. But if you watch it on its own terms and accept it for what it is, I think you will be entertained.
