I think you may be thinking of "The House of God" (1984), with Joe Piscopo, may have been his character who pulled the prank though I can't recall 100%.

That part of the movie is so hilarious! I have not seen this movie in like forever! I remember when it was shown on USA UP ALL NIGHT on the USA Network! Those were the days when USA Network had a heck of a lot better entertainment on than what they have on now.

When I watched that scene in this movie the other day, I was sure I'd seen it done in another movie... but I couldn't even guess what it was. It could be that I saw Young Doctors in the early 80s and forgot everything but that.
