Why I like this movie

I'm not going to kid anyone, this is a bad movie. So bad its almost good! The special effects are pretty cheesy and so is the acting. The storyline is a cool idea but that doesnt help this film. The music is also cheesy and plays at the strangest moments like when Yor is just running around not doing anything heroic. Judge for yourself, but I warn you, this is a b-movie lover's film.

So, noone is brave enough to watch this film... pity. I actually have it on video and every once in awhile I like to MST3k with my friends.

I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass.. and I all out of bubblegum

reply

I love Yor. I wish people these days had the balls to make something as good.
I also wish everyone didn't have to subreference MST3K when reviewing a B-movie. It is incredibly irritating.
no matter what anyone says, the special effects in Yor are good. I am also willing to bet there are other wonderful effects sequences in the full 8 hour series that will probly never see the light of day.

I actually ran to see this in the theater back in 83 after it was on HBO. I went to see this movie at a theater that was torn down because it, like many theaters int eh early 80's , was falling apart. i knew something was wrong with the theater when my mother, who accompanied me along with a cousin of mine, saw paper on the floor in the theater and the carpeting was all ripped up and deshevled. We walked down this dark hallway with lights flickering on and off past other theaters. i was a kid and i had to see this movie in the theater. i was addicted to anything even remotely star warsish at this point.
My mother and i saw in the back row, while my cousin opted to sit more toward the middle of the theater.
other people, who i thought at the time were acting a bit wierd, entered the theater. i didnt know at the time that they were high. i just thought they were loud cause they kept screaming at the theater screen and yelling expletives. God i love the early 80'sLOL.
AS if this story couldt get any weirder, my cousin cae to the back of the theater where my mother and i were sitting to join us. she said a man sitting in the same row as her had, ummmmm, done number 1 in his seat.
But me, i was into this movie. i was loving it. it was a cinematic masterpeice from my ten year old eyes. Giant Reptiles, evil lords, and pretty girls, it just couldnt get any better. And god bless my mother for entertaining my addiction to scifi because i know she probably was sitting there saying, " what is this boy into?" LOL
The early 80's no time like it ever. Till next time my freinds

This movie is one of those that DESPERATELY needed to be MST'd, but unfortunately never was. When I saw this about ten years ago on HBO, it didn't take me long to fall in love with it as one of those horrible movies that you just have to watch over and over. It's basically the 1950's movie "Teenage Caveman" remade, and starring some guy that looks eerily like Dana Carvey as Garth Algar from "Wayne's World." It's bad, and it KNOWS it's bad. Unlike the pretentious BS of "Glitter" or "From Justin to Kelly," you actually find yourself laughing WITH the movie, not at it.

OK - I've just seen Yor...so I'm still on a bit of a "Yor High". My friend who watched it with me said she had a "YORGASIM" while watching - yes, it's that intense. This could be the greatest movie of all time - I'm NOT kidding! The songs, the hair, the Darth Vader guys, the dinosaurs, the super-hot woman on the beach, the last minute trapeez act in loincloth, wow! If I could've rated this movie 1,000,000 - I would have. Oh, yeah...for those of you who haven't seen it, it's on the Action Channel (StarzSuperPak/Encore family of channels) all month long. VIVA LA YOR!!!

I saw "Yor, the Hunter from the future," in the movie theatre. I guess it must have been 1983. It was probably the spring, either just before Return of the Jedi (which I saw opening day -the same day I had my braces put on my teeth - yowch! what a headache) or that summer after. We either had free tickets or the theatre was doing a free showing with a radio station cross-promotion.
Even though it was free, my friend and I were kind of mad at the movie. We had high expectations. Soon, it turned to ridicule, especially concerning the theme. I guess I liked the world and the theme and the girls, but the execution was goofy and the voice track didn't match the movement of people's mouths. So we knew why it was free. I did like the blend of sci-fi and cavemen and the action.

Fast forward many years and I had seen many bad / B -movies on USA, TBS, and TNT, etc., late at night. Many of them I had never seen before, but I wondered about "Yor." I wondered how that song went. Then it was on Sci-Fi channel and with the editing and commercial breaks, it wasn't so bad. Maybe it was nostalgia, maybe it was my better reception and obsevance; I liked it.

So when it was on Action weeks ago, I checked it out. It wasn't quite as good, but I was finally able to hit "mute," and read the lyrics:

"Yor's world,
He's their man
Yor's world,
He's their man"

So maybe I was disappointed because my friend and I thought the words were more funny this way:

"Yor's strong
He's the man..."
etc., etc.

As a bad movie, this is a 10.
I like this genre, so as a real movie, I give it a 6 if they could synch-up that dialogue.
How about, "Phenix, the Warrior," people?

reply

people who reference MST3 all the time are dorks, this show sucks.
It just goes along to prove that people need stuff spelled out for them. These films are funny in themselves without a couple of nerds talking over them.

Long Live Yor !

I'm another one who saw this in the theater. My dad took me to see it at the same second-run theater I saw Orca, Lone Wolf McQuade, The Lone Ranger, and other quality '80s/late '70s fare. (Also the first place I ever played Pac Man at)

Anyway, even then I knew it was truly atrocious. But I'm dying to see it again. THIS NEEDS TO COME OUT ON DVD! I mean really--the entire Fred Williamson Italian Post-Nuke saga is out....why not YOR?!?!?!?!

reply

Thank god for cable which allowed my sister and I to view this movie repetitively during the summer when we were too young to recognize the difference between good and bad movies. I have to admit, I enjoy going to little mom and pop video stores asking for this movie and other favorites. You'll always get one of two responses - 1. shock because they know what you're talking about or 2. shock because they think you're looking for a more exotic film.

reply

Personally I like watching bad movies by themselves, and bad movies on MSTK3(It's just another way of watching a bad movie, and in some cases its the only way of seeing some of the bad films), and they don't talk over them, they only speak in between dialogue on the film they are watching.

My God. I too caught the last 30 minutes of Yor on Encore. I haven't seen this flick in several years. Awesome the first time I saw it. And the theme songs rocks. When the old guy swung and flipped over on the rope to rescue Yor from the impending doom of the atomic pile…and then the theme hits…what in the world is better than that cool sequence!

I hadn't seen it since I was 10 and just caught it last night on Encore Action.

I remembered why I'm so glad I grew up in the 80's.

Genius. The theme is what makes this movie so endearing. Isn't it being played backwards during that part also? It sounded that way to me.

All the crap they put out on dvd and no Yor? A travesty.

reply

I saw part of this movie maybe ten years ago. I wish that I could have seen all of it, but I had to go out. I am surprised it's not out on dvd yet because I would love to see it. It obviously has a larger following than a lot of other B films from the same time period. Hopefully it will be released someday soon. I never thought Lou Ferrigno's Hercules films would be released on dvd and they just came out recently.

One of my friends made me watch this in college because of its infamy. Poor soul was taken to this as a birthday gift when he was 10. Pretty horrible stuff. Would have worked better as an adult film instead: Yor: *beep* from the Future. Heck, they were in loincloths for most of the movie--might as well have gone all the way.

Think about it. it was the early 80's. Movies like Tron, Indiana jones and the Temple of Doom, Return fo the jedi, kung fu movies were shown unedited on regular tv, arnold made musclebound action heroes a staple. Yor came out at jsut the right time for sword and sorcery movies.

Krull, Conan the barbarian, Conan the destroyer, The sword and the sorcerer, etc, these movies were being made one after the other. And it wasn't because people expected them to gross tons of money. They were just so the audience would have fun, so kids could dream of beautiful amazons and battles beyond the stars. Hollywood has become its own worst enemy in the last 20 or so years because it is so politicized and so controlled by the MAN (Management) that its stopped having fun.

So, what do we do to have fun? We rent or buy italian horror and scifi movies (the best in my opinion followed by british scifi). and we rent or buy strait to video movies. Indie films are the future of the fun because the directors arent controlled by anyone.

i miss the early 80's. i miss the carefree attitudes, I miss being sung to by robotic monkeys at showbiz pizza place (remember how much fun showbiz pizza was int he early 80's? All those videogames and carnival type games).

To me, the golden age of cinema scifi/ fantasy / horror was 1967 to 1992

By Grapthar's hammer, I truly love this film.

If there were an actual "so bad, it's good" category, this film would be in the top ten.

I absolutely love the absurdity of it. When is the sequel coming?

This movie is pure entertainment. The best is when Pag swings across to get Yor. If you watch closely and pause it, you'll notice that it's actually done with little dolls. BRILLIANT !!!!

I saw this one at the theatre too. I saw it with my cousin. I wanted to see Empire Strikes Back but my cousins had already seen it so I was forced to see Yor. When I got home from the theatre I beat up my cousin and was grounded for several weeks.

It was a good movie for a few laughs, but I would rather have seen ESB in its second theatrical release.

I was 11 when I saw this in the theater with my dad and 2 younger stepbrothers. I remember thinking it was pretty decent... man, kids are dumb. :) Anyway, I'm dying to see it again now as an adult with - I think - good taste in movies. I remember my dad saying it was terrible, but that he was amused by the ending. How does the ending go? I'd ask him - but I'm sure he won't remember.

I was six years old when I saw this movie in the theater! I still remember it 22 years later! I LOVED this movie.. when your six years old bad movies do not mean a thing.. It had action, romance, and good music!

I saw "Yor" when I was at a friend's slumber party way back in the good old 80s. You can imagine what the viewing experience was like with a room full of 12 year old boys. LOL Actually, we were all pretty much enthralled with it, which is rather sad when I think back on it now.

I caught "Yor" again a couple of times on late night TV during the 80s, and eventually bought the VHS on eBay. By then I hadn't seen it in more than 10 years...oh, what a wake-up call! My brother and I laughed all the way through it. I can't imagine what the full, four hour version must be like.

Maybe we'll get a DVD release soon. Lord knows there's equally cheesy stuff on DVD out there...and some even worse. <shudder>

I saw this in the theatre when I was 5 years old. At the time it was my favorite movie. Being 5 years old in 1983, He-Man was my favorite. I had all the action figures and watched the cartoon, so naturally I figured a movie was in order. We didn't get that until 87, but at the time for me Yor would have to do. Not the same thing I know, but I was 5 at the time. Today I don't remember much of this movie, it's been way too long.

But over the years the theme song stuck with me... well, sort of. In my mind they were singing "YOR!... He's the man, he's the man!... YOR!... He's the man, he's the man!" (repeat until you can't stand it anymore) and I remember singing that in the car all the way home from the theatre. Must have drove my dad and my brother crazy. Even today 23 years later. If I'm busy doing chores or bored on my way to work or something, I find myself humming that chorus or singing it to myself in my head from time to time. For that matter, it's the very reason I looked it up on IMDB just now.

They got it for rent at my local video store on VHS, at least they still did a couple years ago. After reading this thread I'm suddenly feeling the urge to go rent it.

The best parts of all movie history MUST be:

1. The part when Yor hang-glides under that pterodactyl (sp?) into the cave and the theme song comes on like when a heavy metal band comes on stage and shouts out "ARE YOU READY TO F'ING ROCK N' ROLL?!?!?!?!".

2. The trapeze act where the fat almost naked guy saves Yor! Oh yeah: And the AWESOME song blairs in!

3. The song.... 'nuff said!

This movie was made by a GENIUS! Yes, it was THAT GREAT!

ALL TOGETHER NOW:

"Yor's strong! He's the man......."

It's still one of my favorites. It may not be high-tech, but it's lively and creative. I'd love to see the complete miniseries surface on DVD somewhere.

I think Peter Jackson should do Yor re-make.

I love you all for knowing this movie. I caught this wonderful masterpiece at my friends house on VHS I think when I was 5-6 years old. I actually havent seen the movie since then but I still have vivid memories, mostly of the theme song and when the one dude catches a laser blast in his cheek. Unfortunately the thread that linked the score is no longer hosting so anyone who sees a new link please post it.

Yeah, you've gotta love those parts when the theme song breaks in; and what's really funny is that, in that second scene were Pag does the trapeze act, he's saving Yor. So even though Yor's helpless and has to be rescued, he still gets his theme song played 'cause he's the man, I guess. Or maybe they just didn't have time to write Pag an awesome theme song for his heroic scene. LOL
