I don't get it...

Guys help me! I just don't get it! This is one of the most primitive movies I've ever seen. How come all the praise and high IMDB rating??? All the fighting is EXTREMLY slow paced with all the moves staged as if "robots" were fighting. Also, it looks like the whole movie was shot in a pavilion with fake backgrounds and fake sky and clouds. Is it THE style of this movie that everybody likes?

In a word: ninja.

um.. you don't get it?

then i do not think you can be a true master martial artist.

if you try to engage in hand to hand combat against any of those individuals, you will find you cannot touch them. every single one of your moves will be blocked and when they want they will turn the moves against you or take you down at their leisure. shame you are so blind ...

Speaking of ninja, I think Sho Kosugi's films are waaaay better!

reply

that's a low blow!

kosugi's films don't have characters that reach the level of emotional depth in 5 element ninja. i was sickened by the massacre of Tian Ho's school and wanted revenge so badly for him. i'm getting so mad thinking about it now that my hands are shaking as i type this.

i'll give credit to kosugi's opening sword dance number in nine deaths of a ninja. that is truely a landmark in ninja film history.

In a word, yes. That's the style of most Shaw Brothers films I've seen and it's one of the reasons I enjoy them as much as I do. I can't explain it, but I just really enjoy it. There's nothing quite like a Shaw Brothers film.
