Question about difference in running times between VHS and DVD versions

I saw that the CBS/FOX VHS version's running time is listed as 200 minutes while the Warner DVD version's running time is listed as 183 minutes. Why is there a difference between the running times for both versions? Which scenes were cut from the film to account for the missing 17 minutes? Why wouldn't Warner Bros. release the full 200 minute version on DVD?

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I watched this on VHS last night. It is a VIDEOFORM PICTURES release and it is described on the front cover as " A major 180 minute $7 million epic production". This was a release exclusive to videoform a London based company.Great tv movie with a great cast and plenty of action.I loved it.

I have owned both the CBS Fox VHS and the Warner Archive DVD versions. The correct running time, including opening and closing credits would be 186 minutes, give or take a few seconds. That's based on the DVD, where each part runs about 93 minutes.

The DVD is exactly the same as the VHS, with the exception of the opening credits of part 2 - on the tape 2 of VHS, they skip the part 2 opening credits and go straight into the legend "Place: Alaska, Time: The Future."

Whatever was written on the VHS box was not accurate.

When the miniseries was first broadcast, I recorded the audio to cassette tape, so I'm pretty familiar with the miniseries. There's nothing missing from either the DVD or the VHS releases that would account for "17 missing minutes."

I hope that this helps.
