September 2007 DVD release

Amazon.com has a DVD listing where you can pre-order this film, which is slated to be released on September 11, 2007. However, there is a review posted with this listing in which the writer states this version of the White Dog DVD is a bootleg, and that Criterion is working on a licensed, legitimate release with special features and the usual pristine Criterion video.

I emailed Criterion and they confirmed they are working on a White Dog DVD to be released sometime in the near future. They could not give me a hard date.

I just got my Criterion Collection newsletter and I was informed that they are planning for a DVD of a controversial Sam Fuller film due to be released in 2008. I'm certain that this is the one they're talking about.

reply

It is. They give a very precise hint :
"A movie that was allegedly based on the true story of a pet once owned by Jean Seberg."
Jean Seberg's then husband, french writer Romain Gary, wrote a story about it.

reply

I'm glad it is getting a release because I did not think I would ever get to see this film. Hopefully it is released in early 2008.

Does anyone have a link to the newsletter? I received one back in early Aug. but it didn't have any reference to the films' release.

reply

It is the answer the the trivia contest so it was not named specifically but they said it will be released in 2008 somewhere in there.

That's excellent news.

Has anyone actually viewed the Televista release? Its listed under Film Comment's Top Ten home video releases in its September/October issue. I have read varying reports as to the quality of Televista's earlier releases of other material. Also I am curious as to whether Amazon would sell bootlegs; seems more likely bootlegs would come from third party vendors using their marketplace, not Amazon proper.

I just rented this today! having read this thread after trying to research this release, I quick scanned over a couple chapters:

It's a fairly good looking VHS rip.

I have only seen an old VHS bootleg of this once, ten years ago. so I'm no authority on it being uncut/undedited, as the distributors claim. Still, until Criterion's comes out, this'll do as a rental for me!

reply

Great, Criterion will get it; that means I will have to shell out a serious amount of coin-almost $50.99 Canadian-if I want to buy it. Basically, foe me it's a rental. Buzzjoy.
