As 'Waga seishun no Arcadia' ( My youth in Arcadia ) is soon to be released on dvd in the US, how come you can buy a dubbed version on vhs tape, while the producers of the upcoming american disc claim, that it has never been voiced in any other language than it's original japenese track. I had it ! And I've seen it in french at Amazon.fr, in french of course ?
Anyhow I am looking forward to buying it anyway and I am sure I will cry tears of joy, no matter what language the movie is in !
I looked in to the link you sent me and my belief is, that vengeance of the space pirate chronologically storywise is after 'Arcadia'?! But you got me on that one, I don't know the answer... Sorry mate :)
My tape was clearly a dubbeb version of 'Arcadia' that had not been cut or re-edited, as my new dvd perfectly matches my childhood vhs. except for the missing english audio. All I know is that it was a PAL tape importet from Great Britain. I am still looking to solve this puzzle.
If yes, how did Vengeance come out first in 1978 while Arcadia came out second in 1982?" - afnaste

Vengeance of the Space Pirate is misidentifed in your listing as an English version of the Uchû kaizoku Captain Harlock: Arcadia-gô no nazo/Space Pirate Captain Harlock television series. In fact, Vengeance of the Space Pirate is a butchered dub of Waga seishun no Arukyadia/Arcadia of My Youth.
Waga seishun no Arukyadia (1982) was a prequel to Uchû kaizoku Captain Harlock: Arcadia-gô no nazo (1978).

I own both Vengeance of the Space Pirate(boughtin'89) and My Youth in Arcadia, both on VHS,both in english. The only difference is VotSP is shorter by 30 minutes or so.
Vengeance of the Space Pirate was--frankly--a poor dub. And it was heavily re-edited. The same hacks also released watered-down versions of Dagger of Kamui (as Revenge of the Ninja Warrior with copy on the box that placed the story on another planet instead of in the 19th Century!) and Super-Dimensional Fortress Macross: Do You Remember My Love? (retitled Attack of the Bionoids).
None of the dubs for the early 1980's "For Kids" VHS tapes (Clash of the Bionoids, Vengeance of the Space Pirate, Revenge of the Ninja Warrior) were actually done for those releases. In the 1970's and 80's many Japanese animated films were dubbed in Hong Kong in order to be used as a learning tool for people learning the English language.
Macross: Do You Remember Love was fully dubbed into english, and then when the rights were purchased for American distribution the film was heavily edited down for a younger target audience. I would guess that, as the same US company released "Clash of the Bionoids" (the butchered Macross) and "Vengeance of the Space Pirate", this is also the case for the "Arcadia of My Youth" dub. It was most likely dubbed into English in it's entirety, and later edited for the US version "Vengeance of the Space Pirate".
After Robotech became popular in the United States that US distributor tried to capitalize on it and released another version of "Clash of the Bionoids", that still contained the Hong Kong dub, but was completely uncut. And if I remember right the UK version of "Macross" on VHS was the uncut version as well. So I am guessing that your UK release is the complete uncut version of the Hong Kong dub that was edited for the US release.
My VHS tape stats title: "Captain Harlock in Arcadia" run length: "approx. 120 minutes" (translation of what it literally says), i.e. 10 minutes less than the original Japanese version. distributor: Westcon Home Video
