What was the relationship between...

Toddy and Richard? It says in the imdb credits they were lovers. Then Richard shows up at Chez Lui with his family and they know Toddy. Did the family know about they're relationship?

Can someone just explain the whole thing to me? haha!

thanks!

Richard is not with his family. Toddy is making a joke that the woman with Richard is old enough to be his mother, which is why she gets angry. I think all those people are just other ("cooler") friends of Richard's. Or, perhaps Richard is that woman's boy toy when he's not with Toddy.

Toddy and Richard were lovers until Victor arrived.

Did Toddy pay Richard (opening scene) or was Richard just taking money from Toddy?

I think Richard was just a mooch. Sometimes in old movies you see women ransacking their husbands' wallets. That's probably all Richard was doing.

Richard was a PROFESSIONAL "Trapeze Artist" - which means he serviced both sexes for remuneration.. . and Toddy referred to him this way just before that first big fight at Chez Lui , . . . check the DVD

reply

I didn't realize he was a professional. Just thought Toddy said "Aren't you Richard DiNardo, the famous trapeze artist?"

If he was a prostitute, why did he keep a suit of clothing at Toddy's?

reply

Richard kept clothing at Toddy's because he was being "kept" by Toddy while he played/earned on the other end of the Trapeze... so to speak

reply

It's like in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Richard is a kept man, a paid lover. they mention an 'arrangement,' so it's clear that he's being paid, and isn't just randomly taking money.

reply

Richard was stealing money from Toddy; basically he was just using him in their relationship.

reply

I alwys thought that woman with Richard in the club was sort of "fag hag"...she was probably rich and secretly in love with Richard and had already dealt with the fact that he was gay and she would never have sex with him.

reply

Yes Richard was a "trapeze artist" (as in Swings Both Ways). He was clearly stealing from Toddy, but also clear that Toddy expected it.

reply

ok, i have seen this movie countless times, including again last night for the first time in a long while... and I never understood the "trapeze artist" reference. and i, like Richard, swing both ways as well!
