From what I've read, Tobe Hooper didn't get on with Klaus Kinski, Oliver Reed or Nicol Williamson. All for different reasons. And all of whom were notoriously difficult to work with, especially if they didn't like you. And all of whom pretty much hated each other from day one. The way I heard it told was that one day shortly into filming he just walked off the set and never came back. The next thing anyone knew was that stock director Piers Haggard, who mainly worked in British tv, was on the set and had taken over.

Thanks for providing the context to the "creative differences" euphemism. Often what happens behind the scenes is more interesting than the finished product (though this is a very entertaining film),

If you listen to the commentary track on the Blue Underground DVD or on the old Anchor Bay DVD claims are made that Hooper had a nervous breakdown during shooting and even had to undergo shock therapy as a result.

One should judge a man mainly from his depravities.Virtues can be faked.Depravities are real.Kinski

I was living in London at the time, and working in the business, and the news quickly filtered around town... the (strong) rumor at the time was that Tobe was... shall we say... a little the worse for (chemical) wear. Sniff sniff?
