Does anyone find this film unsettling?

As a child of 1982, this film was always on tv when I was a kid.

I love this film but I also always felt a bit disturbed by certain things, I.e MCP voice and cylinder form with face, The command ship that eats up the solar sailer, the creepy computer music, also those pesky flying scout ships. I'm just glad as a kid I didn't understand what MCP meant when said was going after the kremlin and the pentagon!

It was ahead of its time. And I think a lot of what you mention made people either like it, like I do, or just hate it. I thought it was just odd and weird until later in life as a adult. But as a small child, in the 80s, I couldn't be bothered with it.

Never found it unsettling for a second. Still, some people are apparently creeped out by ET the Extra-terrestrial, so what have you.

reply

It has a very uncanny, creepy and bizarre quality.

I found the laser transporter as creepy as it was fascinating. It was uncanny, but there was an allure there; a kind of magical thing, like something that could go very wrong or be very useful depending on the circumstance.

reply

Is that the white ship thing on a laser rail that looks sort of like an angel?

reply

No, I meant the ray gun that can zap a person into a computer. I don't remember what it's called. The thing that the MCU uses to pull Flynn into the computer world.

reply

Oh right! A variation on Wayne Szalinski's electromagnetic shrinking machine. : )

reply

For some reason, though, a teleportation/matter conversion ray seemed more ominous than a size changing ray.

reply

Definitely, and how about how it converts you ONE CUBIC INCH AT A TIME. Uh oh!

I also found this angel ship thing very symbolically portentous and apocalyptic in an Evangelion sort of way.
