Why Even Do It?

I originally thought that Sellers died during the film of Trail of the Pink Panther, but this isn't the case. He died a year or two before filming! So why even make this film? It's like committing to making an absolute mess!

it's a set up for CURSE OF THE PINK PANTHER, that's why they did it, to make CURSE more legit... it's, in a way, allowing Sellers to say farewell thus to lead to Ted Wass

go figure

but that's the reason

watch them both back to back and you'll know what i mean

In my opinion the movie contains a few extremely funny scenes - Dreyfus being more mad than ever, Clouseau's father and the Nanna - as well as the scenes with Peter Sellers himself (i think, at least the airplane scene and the scenes in the office ('Do you have a light, chief inspector?') are hilarious). The final half hour, concedingly, gets too boring - and it is a miracle that the movie made it in the theaters.

Under the bottom line, the few funny scenes in this movie are still worth hundredfold more than an entire "American Pie" - box set.

This film was made back in the days before "deleted scenes" on DVD were a thing. Heck, VHS was in its infancy. Yes, the film is a cash grab, but Edwards also realized that there was a ton of good stuff with Sellers as Clouseau that was excised for time (not because it was terrible) and he thought Sellers fans would like to see it. Maybe a retrospective TV documentary would have been more appropriate, but Trail was also a way to lead into Curse which I see as MORE of a cash grab. At least Trail could be seen as a nice way to remember Sellers and say goodbye, Curse was a ploy to perpetuate the series by replacing him with a new actor/character.

Blake Edwards I think had an attachment to the Panther films because during the time he was making them, his other films bombed so this kept him afloat. However, after he did 10, SOB, and Victor/Victoria, which were successes, you wonder why he needed to do this.
