How much of the old footage is actual 'deleted scenes'?

I just watched this movie, and I have to say, a lot of the recycled footage, I think, was stuff that was actually used in the earlier films. For instance, when Marie Jouvier is talking to Cato, the fight scene shown is exactly the same one that's in The Pink Panther Strikes Again, and then they show the footage of Mr Chong getting attacked by Clouseau from Revenge Of The Pink Panther.

The footage shown from the first Pink Panther movie also appears to be straight out of that picture, and I think the same goes for the footage from A Shot In The Dark.

I'm not sure, but I think the only truly "new" footage that hadn't been used in any of the other movies is the scene in the car with Clouseau fiddling with the cigarette lighter, the scene on the airplane, and the opening bit at Professor Balls' costume shop.

All the scenes of Peter Sellers, before the Clouseau character disappears, are deleted scenes/outtakes from previous Panther films. The Sellers scenes shown after his character disappears are existing scenes from previous Panther films.

And since Clouseau disappears in the middle of the film, you can say about half of the scenes are outtakes/deleted scenes, and the other half are scenes featured in previous movies.

I just watched all Sellers Clouseau movies in a row and I kept most of the second half of this one in fast forward...

I would say that the one new scene i think was actually filmed for Trail was the opening scene in the costume shop with Harvey Korman. Harvey Korman was not the owner of the costume shop in the prior two Pink Panther films , so this had to be a new scene filmed for Trail.

The scene with Peter Sellers and Harvey Korman is an outtake/deleted scene from The Pink Panther Strikes Again. If you notice in this scene, Clouseau is trying out the same Quasimodo disguise that he wears in Strikes Again.

Graham Stark would play the Professor Balls role in Revenge Of The Pink Panther and Son Of The Pink Panther. Korman would play the role again in Curse Of The Pink Panther.

Since Trail and Curse were released within a year of each other, the filmmakers may have wanted some continuity between the two films.
Since they used the deleted Strikes Again footage of Korman and Sellers, for Trail, bringing back Harvey Korman for Curse, instead of Graham Stark, was the logical thing to do.

One thing that can be specially noticed, is the elevator scene from The Pink Panther Strikes Again, with the hole in one of the bags and all the rice pouring out.
In Trail of.. it has been severely extended.
In Strikes Again, the scene first begins right after he has left the elevator.
But in Trail of.. it begins at a convenience store, where you see why there is that hole in the bag.

But you know, with all these scenes that originally was not used, makes you wonder why no one ever got the idea of "Directors Cut" versions of them, where all these scenes has been added.

They were best to not even include this scene. Sure, the elevator sequence wasn't featured in "Strikes Again" but the rest of it where he runs into that woman, does the dance on the rice, and gets his pants caught in the door of his apartment WAS. Obviously if they were going to show the elevator thing they would have had to show the rest of the scene, but to see the exact same thing in a later movie that's not even a flashback I remind you, did not make any sense. Talk about Deja vu. They should have left that out entirely which would have also included the scene we see him coming from the store and barks at that dog, which I think was new footage with a stand-in from behind since we don't see his face, meant to lead into the used footage.

Um, that's because that footage was used to make THIS movie. While it would be good to see an extended version of "Strikes Again" with the footage inserted, it would probably be confusing since they were put to use to form the plot of this movie and used differently.

I wonder why they didn't bring Harvey back for the role in "Son". It was rather odd having Graham come back considering Harvey was already playing the role in the previous two movies. We have the character looking like Graham, aging to look like Harvey, and then aging to look like Graham again? Talk about consistency. Perhaps Harvey wasn't available? That could be why he didn't return for the role in "Revenge". That's understandable, but I wish they could have just gotten some one else who at least looked like Harvey. Why Balls' whole scene was cut from "Strikes Again" to begin with and it introduced the character is beyond me. It should have stayed in.
