Remake material?

Of all the classic films I can think of this one should be remade. Despite some flaws, this was a very enjoyable film.

Unfortunately, it is not a film to stand the test of time and should remade to allow it's post generations a chance to enjoy this theme on a newer updated format.

Actually, I think it's a remake itself. I cant remember the name of the movie, but it is French, and the plot runs along the lines of this (a reporter becomes the toy of a billionaire's spoiled son). The only reason I say this is that the French one was made in 1970-something. You can probably find it here.

Yes, it's based off the French book by Francais Veber. The French movie is Le Jouet (1976).

I really can't see this film being remade in this intensely political correct world we live in right now, because at the time of release, there was a school of thought that this film was very racist...a white millionaire purchases a black man as a toy for his spoiled brat of a son. Whether or not the film is racist I guess is up to the individual, but many felt this way back in '82 and I would imagine that a remake might receive the same backlash in this more politically correct age we live in today.

I also can't see it being remade, at least with the exact same elements. Theres some pretty edgy stuff in this movie, for a light comedy. Also, as a very young kid in the mid and late 80's, this was one of my favorite movies.

That is why it should be switched to a rich, black family with a white "toy".

reply

Sure..why not? It's not like whites have a race card to wave around or a case where we could whine about racism. I'm sure Hollywood would be happy to make it a black family with a Caucasian man. They'd probably throw in a few 'cracker' or 'honkey' jokes in. They'd make the white guy dumb, unlike Pryor's somewhat intelligent character. Yep, it'd be a hit today.

It should be remade with Jackie Chan in the lead. of course you'd have to change the plot a little but somehow he'd be perfect for the role since it involves alot of physical comedy, plus kids seen to like him.

If people got offended all of a sudden from the confederate flag on the roof of the General Lee in Dukes of Hazzard, then I doubt they can see the humor in the rich white son "buying" the black man as a toy. I'm not sure I'd want Adam Sandler remaking this movie, I just get that feeling it won't be very good. I'd love to see Dave Chappelle take a crack at it though.
