Did I imagine it? (Spoiler)

I seem to recall seeing The Thing on tv back in the 80’s, and it ended with a dog running away from the camp. Did I just remember wrong? Was that a TV edit? Anyone remember? Thanks.

reply

nope.
all doggos got killed by The Thing in the cage.

the stupid prequel end with the husky running off.

My thought at the time was that the Thing, having arrived in camp as a running dog, left camp while the end credits rolled, again as a dog. This was on TV (remember, 80’s movies tended to make a lot of changes from theatrical release, see Dune / Aliens / Wrath of Khan, etc). I was a little surprised when I bought the dvd and the ending was different than I remembered....

never heard of that, sorry

Ah ha!!! I just saw the alternate ending on youtube for The Thing. I *knew* it! I wasn’t crazy, a “dog” did run away again in the end! :)

That was the end of the 2011 version.

No. My memory was correct and predates the 2011 film. See the link in this thread.

THE MOVIE DOES END LIKE THIS!!! You saw the 1987 TBS recut of The Thing, which ends with new footage of one surviving dog running, stopping to look back at the burnt camp, and continuing into the snow.

You can watch it on YouTube here. Sorry I’m the only responder who knows about this, apparently.

That looks like footage from the beginning of the film, the dog running away from the helicopter.

You saw the TV version of "The Thing" with added scenes.. you didn't imagine anything.. and most here who answered don't know about the "tv cut" version... the dog running has a narrative voice that says "who knows what lies behind every man, every..... and so on...!

The TV version would have had a shorter running time with all of the graphic gore and violence cut out. So they would have pulled out every trick in the book to boost it back up to proper length. Including taking cut footage of the dog from the beginning of the movie escaping from the Norwegian camp and tacking it on to the end to make it look like a miraculous magical survivor dog escaping from the American camp.

Yes, there was a tv edit, I've seen it also. It was just horrible.
