Sick Bag

I agree with the reviews of the time when the movie came out. It's more a gross out film than anything. In my opinion everything is secondary to the vomit inducing special effects.

There is a good film in there but I spend most of my time trying to keep my lunch down. Noticed a similar thing with Carpenter's Prince of Darkness.

That was my first impression as well. I learned to appreciate its other aspects later on.

Prince of Darkness is much tamer in this regard (and one of Carpenter's best movies, a bit underrated I believe). Or I had become comfortably numb by then when I saw PoD.

THE THING IS AN AMAZING WORK OF HORROR...PRINCE OF DARKNESS IS A MESS.

reply

What's so messy about Prince of Darkness?

reply

The messy things...

Not a good film in there at all. It is the barest bones gross-out movie ever, and not even any cute young girls getting scared in it either. No redeeming qualities to seeing a bunch of old men acting scared of claymation monsters.

reply

Agreed not one shower scene absolute rubbish.

reply

Congratulations. You've literately reduced women to purely existing for eye candy...

reply

Just because I'd rather see a woman in a movie than claymation slime ... nice try wimdit.

reply

Correction. You'd rather see "cute, young girls". Pretty creepy man.

reply

You are real piece of work ... where in the movies and media do they put on average or ugly women ... or men for that matter. If that is creepy for you so be it ... maybe it's just you.

reply

Lol. I'm a piece of work for pointing out your pathetic, sexist viewpoint that The Thing would have a redeeming quality if it had sexy young girls in it? Boiling women down to T&A. OK then fella...

The Thing is a masterpiece in suspenseful storytelling and practical special effects and I'm sad for that you can only see it as "a bunch of old men acting scared of claymation monsters".

I'm guessing you're about 11 so hopefully when you grow up, you'll see there's more to film than ogling at women. Maybe Trolls World Tour is a little more your speed and you can come and revisit The Thing in a few years.

There are plenty of actors out there that aren't considered conventionally attractive that have won numerous, high profile awards.

As a female, I love some good male eye candy so I can’t really be offended or fault men for enjoying the same. I’d watch a movie purely to see a hot man that I like and as scary movies go that is a real trope, using sexy women die lol. You kind of expect it.

reply

Thank you.

reply

Wow. With a statement like that there’s no sense in even trying to talk logically to you about the film.

😂

reply

Sure...

I thought the gore has a good place in the context of the film. It shows that The Thing is violent and will wipe out humanity at first chance.

It had to be destroyed.. so the graphic scenes make the viewer appreciate the humans trying to destroy it. There isn't a grey area whether or not The Thing can live harmoniously with us.

reply

I have a similar experience. There’s much to appreciate in The Thing, but most of it is overwhelmed by the pressing need to puke throughout the film - from graphic close-ups of bloody organs being pulled from a mutant corpse, to the repulsive dog massacre creature, to characters having their limbs and faces chewed off.

I wouldn’t change the film, it’s a classic, but I wonder if a little restraint might have created a more tense experience akin to Predator rather than the goofy splatter movie we ended up with.

More like you need an awesome bag to watch this movie, because its one of the best of all time.
