If Norris-thing can have an imitation heart attack then a Childs-thing would respond to gasoline on its imitation taste buds.

MacReady was lifting the bottle up to drink from it as as Childs came up behind him. For this theory to hold water, you have to accept that MacReady was going to consciously drink gasoline.

never really understood the gasoline theory. just seems like overanalyzing something that isnt there.

the whole J&B thing is symbolic of what happens the first time we see Mac. he's playing a game of chess and, when he loses, he pours J&B into the "cheatin bitch." same thing happens at the end. Mac loses his game of chess after blowing up the entire base and moments away from freezing to death, so he pours J&B into the cheatin' bitch, which is the thing, which is childs.

I always thought the J&B thing was Carpenters nod to giallo and poliziotteschi.

I don't agree with the theory it was gasoline either. It's not like we saw him fill it with gasoline. I more just considered him giving Childs the bottle of liquor and him smiling to mean he thinks Childs isn't the Thing. Since the Thing, not knowing things about Earth might have passed on it thinking it's harmful.
