Of the S.E. Hinton books that made it to film:

This one has the best score (by Pino Donaggio).

I hate to use this word, but it's also underrated... not mentioned as much by people who've seen the other movies. That Was Then, This Is Now is probably the weakest of the four and that board is jumping compared to this one! I thought there was more character development in this one than in The Outsiders and, despite Tex and Mace's situation, it was nowhere as bleak as Rumble Fish - although, both films are on par (one for its score and the other for its cinematography). I was surprised that this movie is distributed by Disney since it's a good quality young adult movie and I often think of them distributing movies strictly aimed at children. The message stays positive, but never patronises its characters and audience.

I think I read somewhere the reason it was underrated (and i agree, it was) was beacause there was no such thing as PG13 back then.

Personally, I LOVE the Stewart Copeland score for 'Rumble Fish'! Have the CD! The score for 'Tex' is terrific too, but the Copeland score is my favorite.

My preference of the S.E. Hinton movies, from best on down are:

"Rumble Fish" (1983) Rated "R", Running Time: 1hr&34mn
***1/2 (Out of ****) Awesome! Briliant use of B&W cinemaphotography and innovative film score. Very metaphorical.

"Tex" (1982) Rated "PG", Running Time: 1hr&43mn
***1/2(Out of ****) Thought provoking. Nicely handled about growing up fast.

"The Outsiders" (Original Version)(1983) Rated "PG", Running Time: 1hr&31mn
*** (Out of ****) Nostalgic. Bitter sweet. Loved all those sunsets.

"That Was Then...This is Now" (1985) Rated "R", Running Time: 1hr&42mn
**1/2 (Out of ****) Fair to good. Could have been better.

"The Outsiders: The Complete Novel" (1983/2005)
Rated "PG-13", Running Time: 1hr&54mn
** (Out of ****) New scenes compromise the pacing. The movie drags too slow now. Disapointed Coppola dropped most of the original score, which was a terrific score. The original score helped give the movie a nice 'timeless' quality. Without it, the movie feels 'average'.

That's my two cents worth,

I think they meant it was not appreciated, not that it should have a stronger rating. I don't think Disney would have the guts to make this movie now.
